Welcome to WIRE. We’ll brief the local and international news of the week so that you
can be more informed during your busy schedule.
On Friday, the House and the Senate voted to extend the payroll tax cuts. According
to the Congressional Budget Office, the tax cuts are expected to increase the deficit
by 119.5 billion dollars over five years; however, lawmakers are hoping that this will
improve the status of the working class right now. One point of disagreement was that pension
benefits for federal employees would be cut to help pay for some costs of the bill. President
Obama promised to sign the bill into law promptly.
On Wednesday, the FDA announced that it detected trace amounts of lead in 400 shades of lipstick
made by L'Oreal and Maybelline. The highest lead concentration was found in Maybelline's
Color Sensational Pink Petal lipstick, and two lipsticks by Cover Girl and two by NARS
were found to have a high lead content. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has been pushing
the government to set limits on the amount of lead in lipstick for years. The FDA insists
the amount of lead detected during testing isn’t a serious safety concern, but the
agency does not set limits for it in cosmetics.
On Thursday, two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were shot dead, and a third I.C.E.
agent was shot and injured at the Glenn Anderson Federal Building in Downtown Long Beach. The
shooter was an I.C.E. agent as well, who killed one fellow officer and wounded another before
being shot and killed himself. Long beach police, fire, and FBI agents responded to
the scene, and the cause of the shooting remains unknown.
