Commercial free-to-air broadcasters and national broadcasters
must provide captioning for all television programs
shown on their main channel between 6:00pm and 10:30pm
up until 1 July, 2014.
They must also caption any news or current affairs programs
broadcast outside of those hours.
Commercial free-to-air and national broadcasters
must also provide captions for 90% of the television programs
broadcast on their main channel between 6:00am and midnight,
increasing to 95% from 1 July, 2013, and 100% from 1 July, 2014.
Commercial free-to-air and national broadcasters
are only required to caption programs on their multi channels
if the program has already been broadcast with captions
on their main channel.
Programs that are not in English or mainly not in English
don't have to be captioned.
For subscription television
annual captioning targets take into account the channel's genre,
amongst other key aspects,
with targets increasing each financial year.
From 1 July, 2014, these targets will range from 5% for music services
to 75% for movie services.
