Ten-Hut! Take, Seats! Sgt. Snake hear to share a little about the
film Jarhead, which is slang for a Marine. But these Jarheads are special, They are Scout
Snipers. Trained to wait forever just for one perfect shot, Scout Snipers see war a
little differently. Unfortunately, this war was Operation Desert Shield and, briefly,
Desert Storm. The ground war lasted only a few days, which left Anthony Swofford and
company feeling cheated. So what kind of a war movie doesn't have a war? Answer: Jarhead!
Why would I recommend this movie? 3 Reasons. First of all, the military has a way with
words. Calling a pen an ink-stick, for example. Hsss-sss-sss...an ink-stick...that amuses
me. Secondly, there are some funny moments and
quotes, such as "Welcome to the suck" after running through hazards to retrieve a dead
radio battery. Hsss-ssss...if only I had a nickel for every time my radio died just when
I needed it. Third, I recommend this movie because it portrays
a very real phenomena: many service members spent years being pumped up and trained for
a war that they never got involved in. From 1976 to 2001, the US was involved in 3 short
invasions or occupations. Many of us spent our time training and preparing for a war
that didn't happen. The Marines featured in this film only wanted one rifle shot, and
they never got it. That leaves a mark, a mark which leads to PTSD and other stress symptoms
that require a supportive community, including paid therapy and coaching. This is one of
many causes supported by K-Pot Coffee: a veteran-owned business that donates to veteran charities.
Named for the Kevlar helmet worn by our troops, the K-Pot Coffee is a delicious roast that
