(Dr. Michael Hoadley). Okay, I think we will go
ahead and get started with the program.
What a great turnout for the Second Annual Technology Day
here at Eastern Illinois University.
I thank all of you for coming, all the guests.
We will go through the list here in a little bit.
Very pleased to see everyone being a part of this.
It really is exciting here for Eastern.
Again, I want to point out that we do have a technology fair
going on down in the Grand Ball Room that is being co-sponsored,
co-hosted by Information Technology Services, Booth
Library Media Services, and then CATS,
the Center for Academic Technology Support.
And really it's been going very very well.
We have all the venders here for lunch.
I am not going to go through the list and introduce them, but
would they please stand up and let's give them a big thanks.
[audience applause].
We have many vendors down there and
they're excited to talk to you.
I hope you see products, services, and all kinds
of fun things that we should be looking at the
possibity of their integration here at Eastern.
As you know my philosophy is that we try to make that
information and resources available to you,
but we need your input.
We want to hear what you would like to see in the classroom.
What you would like to be seeing on campus.
That is why we want you to attend.
I saw a lot of students down there earlier and
they were pretty excited, too.
They are going to be coming back, I'm sure,
to all of you with ideas as well.
I want to give a real special thanks to John Looby in Media
Services and John Henderson from CATS and ITS,
because they are the two people that have really coordinated
that whole technology fair.
So to both of them, thank you.
[audience applause].
Next year it will be even bigger.
I think we are talking 15 to 20 new vendors
will be there next year as well.
So, we will be moving out into the hallway and down the hall,
so, let's will see how that works out.
I have put the challenge to them now.
Okay, we are going to start out first with comments from
President Hencken and Provost Lord.
So, President Henken.
[audience applause].
(President Louis Hencken). Thank you very much.
Since this is a technology fair, the first thing that I need to
do is check my cell phone to make sure I have turned it off
so it doesn't go on during my presentation here.
And now that I have done that, I want to welcome everyone to
the Second Annual Technology Day.
First of which is to congratulate the 16
2004 faculty award recipents.
It is a tremendous honor and you should be very pleased.
I know you will get more attention later on so I am just
going to say congratulations to you on that.
You know, in case you did not know this, for the last
9 or 10 years, I have been on the
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Board.
As such, we go through and every three years the accrediting team
comes through to take a look at what goes on at the hospital.
At Eastern, and most universities, we do the
accrediting process every 10 years.
So, I have been, they just finished the accredidation
process again this year and I happened to say something.
Why do you do three years in the hospitals, I didn't mention the
fact that we do ten here because they might get the idea that we
would do things every three to five years
here for the accredidation.
Their answer was two reasons.
Number one was to continue that the paitent care is
always taken care of but secondly is technology.
They said that the technology in the medical field changes so
rapidly that they want to do an accredidation process every
three years to ensure that the hospitals continue to meet the
needs of the patients with their most recent technology.
This is why last spring we began discussing
long range plans at the university.
Several long range plans that we talked about were in housing,
about how we can improve the safety with
improving the physical facilities.
Second, we began to talk last year about a
long range plan for technology.
This is why, I am going to close on this, and I am very pleased
to hear that Mike Hoadley and Chad Chetergee this Friday at
the ATAC Committee will begin discussing rolling out plans for
a five year plan for the university in improving
technology in the classroom.
I think that this is something that we need.
We need a long range plan.
We certainly need the best technology we can
possibly have for the education of our students.
Again, congratulations to the winners, the recipients.
I am very pleased to be able to be here
to welcome you all today.
Thank you very much.
[audience applause].
(Provost Lord). I too want to welcome
all of you here to the Second Annual Technology Day.
I want to express my appreciation, as it has already
been expressed, to all the people who put this on including
Mike Hoadley and those who assisted him,
as well as our guests.
I do not know if you all have had a chance to read the
flyer that is on the table about this day.
What I commend to your attention, particularly the long
paragraph in the middle of the front page.
It lists many, many intitatives of the last year or so in the
area of technology and from that you can get a hint of some of
the progress that we have been making.
Many of us are quite aware of the network
upgrade that we just completed.
But you might not be so aware of all the other inititatives that
are ongoing and in many cases well
along toward completion as well.
For an Eastern Provost, I've been told that I am pretty well
seasoned, having completed three years here at this point.
But I still feel pretty new.
I think back to when I first came to Eastern and shut my eyes
and tried to imagine that we would have made as
much progress on all these initiatives as we have today.
I just don't see that in the dream that I have, but I am
delighted that we have made that kind of progress.
I too want to congratulate the award winners today, all the
faculty colleagues that have assisted with this whole
initiative, as well as any staff members
that have assisted as well.
I haven't had the opportunity to hear the whole program today,
but I know I am going to be delighted at this point.
I can hardly wait until next year to see what else comes up.
Thanks.
[ audience applause].
(Dr. Hoadley). Thank you President Hencken
and Dr. Lord.
It is exciting, there are some exciting things going on.
As the President pointed out, we are going to start talking about
the comprehesive technology plan and getting more feedback from
the campus and seeing what has been implemented,
recommendations that came out of that campus-wide committee, and
start discusing how we are going to keep moving forward.
So, everybody in this room will have an opportunity to be part
of that and will continue dialogue.
Hopefully, you will want to be a part of that,
but I am sure you will.
This is the year of the network upgrade.
I will make these comments brief.
We have some very special guests here,
and I want to make sure that they are recognized.
We have representatives here from Tang and Associates,
Multi-Media Solutions, Anderson Electric, Cisco, and STL,
Facilities, Planning, and Management here at Eastern, ITS,
and of course, there are many others on campus.
Would those representatives please stand up, the ones who
have been involved, all those groups that I mentioned.
[audience applause].
Pretty exciting things there.
I mean as you look at the program, the front shows
us this is the year of the network upgrade.
It is a remarkable solution that we have come up with, it is
still evolving, and it is very exciting in terms
of what could happen.
Then as the President and Provost both made comments,
there are many individuals, many groups, and organizations on
campus that are obviously far too
numerous to be able to highlight today.
A lot of the people who are here are the leaders on this campus,
and there are many others but, when I look at the academic
technology advisory committee, or the student senate,
government representatives that we have here, the ATAC lab
coordinators, including the Gregg Triad staff, and the other
labs that work, the Booth Library Lab,
all the ATAC lab people.
This summer, we had a lab stearing committee conference
that was held, Technet, Team Grants Council, and of course
our support from the Office of Academic Affairs,
and all the colleges and departments on campus.
One person can't do it, we all do it together,
that makes the difference.
Again, thank you for coming.
Today, we are here though, this luncheon
is to recognize the faculty.
We have 16 faculty members who will be recognized for the
excellence in the use of technology.
Some phenomenal things have been going on here
at Eastern, years before I came.
Hopefully, it continues as I am here, and as CATS is part of the
campus infrastructure, we are just very, very proud of you.
