Workers from Solid Energy mines
hope to present a plan to government this week to ensure
the company's Spring Creek Mine on the West Coast remains open.
The company announced in August it was cutting 140 jobs
at its Huntly and Greymouth coal mines.
Potaka Maipi reports.
This use to be the sound of prosperity in Huntly,
but now it's the sound of unemployment.
Miners from Solid Energy's Spring Creek and Huntly East Mines
will travel to Parliament tomorrow
to plead with the government to save not only their mines
but also the communities that depend on them.
But local leaders say
this isn't the first time this has happened to Huntly,
and no matter what, they'll survive.
An announcement will be held today in the Huntly East mine,
but it doesn't matter who keeps their jobs,
Huntly will still suffer.
But with an already high rate of unemployment in Huntly,
losing 140 jobs will be a major blow.
It's sad for the families of Huntly.
No doubt, some will move off-shore and Huntly will just dry up,
all because of the mines.
Despite the announcements,
the workers will still travel to Parliament tomorrow.
