Hi, I'm Linda. I'm a principal lecturer here at the University of Cumbria and I'm going
to talk to you about a route into teaching. It's a foundation degree in Teaching and Learning
Support, and it's ideal if you're already working as a teaching assistant in a school
or an educational setting. The great thing about the programme is that you can keep your
job as a teaching assistant whilst you're studying, so you can earn while you learn.
I ended up doing this foundation degree through the school that I'm in now in Barrow-in-Furness
as the head teacher prompted me to do this course to pursue my career in teaching as
it was a more manageable route. The modules on the programme link to the things
that you're doing in work: behaviour management, supporting literacy and numeracy, inclusive
practice, and your assignments are based on these subjects.
At the end of the programme, you'll have a foundation degree in Teaching and Learning
Support, and you'll have options to go on to a BA (Honours) or to apply for the Bridge
to QTS. I came onto this course through a school in
Barrow-in-Furness. I'm currently working as a teaching assistant. I have two young children,
which means being released one afternoon a week, I can be at home with them and earn
some money as well. Over the last few years, many of our foundation
degree students have gone on to become primary school teachers. If you'd like to come along
to an open evening, we can explain to you further some of the routes that will be available
to you. For more information, visit cumbria.ac.uk/education
