Hello. My name is Portia ocampo. Today I'm going to show you two
things you can do to improve the performance of your computer
please note that I will be conducting these tasks on a computer that uses
Windows 7
as its operating system. Another thing you need to know
is that performance will vary according to your hard drive size,
the number of files you have, and the amount of memory
your computer is equipped with.
Okay. The first thing I want to show you how to do
is defragment your computer's hard drive. Why would one want to defragment
their hard drive? Well, to make a long story short,
Windows stores all over your files in fragments.
These fragments are stored in different areas on your hard drive
each time a file is opened and saved.
Over time, these fragments take
longer to find by the hard drive reader. This explains one of the reasons why it takes
so long to open a single file.
By defragmenting your drive,
you allow the hard drive reader to access your files
more quickly. Are you ready? Okay, we're going to start by
selecting the start button. Once that button
is open, over to the right you will select 'computer.'
Click it. Then select the
drive you what to defragment. Which is the top one.
a new window after you selected it
right click and select 'Properties' which is located
at the bottom.
A new window will pop up; from here you will select the 'Tools' tab
located at the top. Now click the 'Defragment now' button.
Another window will pop up.
Within this window select the drive
inside the 'Current status' box that you want defragmented.
Last, click the 'Defragment disk'
button located at the bottom. Now your computer
will run through several passes to consolidate fragmented
file. Depending on your computer's specifications
and the condition of your hard drive, this could be a quick
or long process. For the sake of expediting
this lesson, here's what the final result will look like
once defragmentation has completed.
It should read '0% fragmented.'
Great! You've now learned how to defragment your hard drive.
The second thing I'm going to show you how to do
is to increase the performance of your computer by adjusting the performance
within Windows.
Whether you know it or not, the desktop themes you select
within Windows requires computer resources to run them.
Adjusting the performance in Windows will help
you allocate resources where you want them to go.
For instance, if you use your computer for graphic applications,
multimedia software, or a graphic intense
video game, you'd want to adjust the PC's performance
so that you can get the best performance while working or playing games.
To do this, you will need to follow these
simple steps. First click the 'Start' button.
Next, move your mouse over to computer
NOTE: do not click the 'Computer' button. We want to right-click it
and a pop-up window will come up. Select 'Propertiess which is located at the bottom
A new window will appear showing
your computer's specifications. On the left hand pane,
you will see a selection entitled 'Advanced System
Settings' at the bottom, please select it.
Now a new window appears
with tab selections ensure the tab you select
is the 'Advance" tab.
Now, you will click the 'settings' button in the performance box.
Under the 'Visual Effects' tab, select 'Adjust for best performance.'
You will notice that
all the boxes below become unchecked.
Click 'Ap'ply and then click 'OK.'
Did you notice that your desktop
theme changed? You can restore them under his performance change by
right-clicking
on your desktop and selecting 'Personalize'
at the bottom. A new window will pop up with your desktop themes.
Select any theme and you're done.
Now, we've completed two things
that will help improve your computer's performance. Thank you.
