My advice to parents wanting to start a family, several folds. No. 1: Are you financially
ready? No. 2: Are you mentally ready? Because this is a lifelong commitment.
If they're ready for that, then other things that are important. Make sure you start taking
your folic acid at least a month before conception. Make sure you avoid smoking. Obviously, if
your end goal is to have a healthy child, those things become very easy.
So when parents are planning to get pregnant, in regards to health, I tell them, 'I want
you to follow FESP.' F is for fiber -- increase everything that has fiber in it, those are
fruits and vegetables. E is for exercise in mind and body. It's important for you to decrease
inflammation. Then for S and P, you decrease those. You decrease your salt and sugar, and
you decrease preservative intake.
Pregnancy, you have to prepare for it. It's not just, 'Oh, we want to get pregnant.' It
is such an important, such a privilege to be pregnant. There are many, numerous women
and families that are trying to get pregnant, that deserve to have children, but they can't.
If you want to get pregnant, you've got to make sure that psychologically you're ready,
physically you're ready. And you've addressed all this issue that you may have had genetically
with your health care provider.
