hi I'm Patrick fee for MCTV
in the Avalon theatre, and I were going to be talking today
to a couple people about a great new
theatrical production going up in just a couple weeks
right down in Oxford.
I'm gonna I'm gonna let you both introduce yourselves and arm
and endemic and the characters that were playing in this new players coming up
go ahead I'll false all start my name is John Morton and I play a character
name Henry Bellingham and I and one
love the directors love wuv
rival golf Country Club's and
part of the story surrounds the fact that these two rival
country club directors have these have this enormous bet going
and all the shenanigans and mischief that arises from that
so it's all it all deals with with things happening on
on the fairway in a golf a at a country club
and a couple might happen with the country club and the
and I think it's called Fox on the fairway if those everybody's time outfox
one another
it and nobody a his
tells the whole way anyway but now but well so I thought in the fairway
at 21 players and Susan masses of Patterson and I think his wife
I'm Uriel are described is
a steamroller a woman which in real life
arm she's a lone parent
are and it is her in she shop
that is online in this past which
does not please her at all so so on
and the Europe is good be down at 21 players are doing it at the Oxford
Community Center
arm and I when when this show open up
we open up on Thursday August 15th
and that's traditionally the om with that whole
you Thursday yet where you can get in
for half-price you to tickets
for fifteen dollars it's a great deal and the nice thing about the Oxford
Community Center
is that its a kuwait place
to see a show yes very comfortable seating
does not there's not a bad seat in the house you can see
everything a its is here
just it's all worth I spare condition
and it it it's a very lively the
unpretentious comfortable place to see
a good show on screen at the I know that the Oxford Community Center
has gone through a whole metamorphosis
over the last couple years asians the renovations are incredible also
they were the first organization in a maryland above eleven different
grants are to make the the entire
to make it lead accessible to make an all green
so actually what's interesting about the actual committee senator is now the
all the heating and air conditioning is all geothermal
it's all from green and and a great way to go so it's
is good on the environment and I and great on the soul to get out and see a
good show
oh yeah um so okay so we have we have a certain show opening Fox on the fairway
arm on the 15th as gonna run for three weekends
arm and the exploit a little bit more about
a maybe some the other characters or what was like that
already if you're giving that elevator speech on
why you should come see this comedy what do you think a good laugh
me home its is the regular comedies where you sit in Google and there are
comedies where you left out loud
this is a laugh out loud it is a very physical
I farce a call I
everybody running into each other are there's a young couple that can't seem
to get their act together and they finally do of course cuz it's a comedy
I I'm the only person went up with two men I think it's too I
I think I made for PO at my age I end up with two men I think it's absolutely
wonderful
arm but everybody sort of moving and different directions and nobody knows
where anybody else is going
are it's very funny perhaps the biggest problem we have one stage
is that we end up laughing at each other which we're not supposed to be doing
last night who was a really good example if last night I would give anything away
but last night
susan and the and Tom and Paul
a on character Nikki my rival
and a dickey based try the new bit
more quite sure if it was a good idea
when they tried it it to shut the cast doubt we just knew
go out everyone just started laughing so hard
I can see what we do yes and and you know
its about drugs
'em is the director and she's very very
put the show together very carefully she
a she had a great vision for what kinda cash that she wanted
were kinda time when the play was gonna have she understood very well
that you put together a great cat now I as a cast member I say she put together
a great course of course
actually started out as her assistant director
I'm a couple weeks ago when the principal actors Ross juror who was just
tourism is wonderful in in in in the role that I have now
ended up with with with a medical issue and so he can't
continue so we swapped roles he became the assistant director and I'm trippin
spar over
flood that being said that notwithstanding
better great job putting the cast together the young couple
army grand and Nicolette um
Nicola home let and I just Necron day
all right thank you I'm sorry it's I want everybody by the character's name
from Gordon Freeman
and have worked with me before so I i apologize for that but
a there the as a young couple there's terrific
therefore energy they just keep moving
they have their characters down are Mickelson is an absolute natural media
I'll yes this year's at at but also were tell me about
Debbie harmon what her passionate yeah he plays
Debbie plays am Pamela the
the the divorce a the serial the serial
love married woman in town and she
plays on the ex-wife my rival
and she becomes we have a scene
where we call each other not nice thing other units
its it's great this is where my overbearing personality really shows
itself
and she comes right back it's kids it's great
she's up she's a bit of a vamp yes
and arm dates or have a thing going that does
not please me at all yes but since I think I would it be built
why should I care but she said she's not she's a a glamorous man
and it to give away part workers all about
a ed yet she comes into to see me and she says
can I have a drink I say a 10-15 warnings his
I know I'm getting a late start me sheesh use
and she's just she's a wildcard yes
yes so um it you alluded before to the fact that
you know they get be careful not to laugh at each other on stage 1 I'll
it what's what's important about the
rehearsal process for sure like this I mean I turm
do you see it to be a have you have you seen
you said a couple things have popped up in ideas that come up with
a how has that grown over the space of this
3 sb I know you guys came in a lil bit late last couple weeks that way but
you've been there the whole time most
as assistant director rate and susan what would you say
I'll the she's essential piece in comedy I think and and
I'm having got back into theater after never years out
on this is only my third show was tapped and I've done mostly serious theater but
it seems to me that the essential part is tightening
are you absolutely it has to be
a joke and fall flat if you're if you're too late on the punch line or on
on the action and sell right now once we have our lines
right now it's time income coming in at the right spot making the right
gesture at the right spot and again with us adds a lot of physical
comedy Emmy you we've got golf clubs in our hands a lot of physical comedy
no oh yeah and that's yeah just working things out now
now the people have got no I'm I'm still out how all my lines down but once
people get their lines down
it's not just a matter reciting lines you looking person in the eye
reacting to them and suddenly and this happens
in rehearsals and happens on stage when you're
one performing the show when you're you know when you're on the boards in front
of an audience
things happen and we can react to and some time someone will give you a smart
grid
do something real thank you something we'll try something
and you want to keep it fresh yeah and you go with you go with
and I'm and we'll we'll talk a bit more about that in going within a couple
minutes
we're talking about Fox on the fairway the next
show happening down in Oxford at the arm Oxford Community Center

once again we're back here are at the Avalon theatre
we're talking about a brand new show coming up
the next show in a and tap
trevan players a season called Fox on the fairway
opening up on august the 15th one make sure you see it a
calmly a farce and arm here talking with the
John and Susan all about the show and and all the opportunities you have to
come see it
so we're talking about about the show arm
but I also hear it's not just you know don't have to just make it
a maker show you can make dinner shows are very muchly specialty running now
well yeah I mean you know it's Oxford is one most beautiful towns
arguably one most beautiful towns in the country was on the best restaurants in
with my
restaurants and other restaurants like the Robert youu
you have live from worst in the latitude 38 and we'll
the about a 10 percent discount to call up to make a reservation
and I think yet to have a reservation by six o'clock at six o'clock and they
guarantee a
they would get you out in plenty of time to get to
I love the community center get your seat get comfortable meet your neighbors
and watch out so you save 10 percent great town
great show I mean great entertainment ignite the idea is it sounded wonderful
day
nice night I I know I'm doing its job we've got alotta 238
we have pope's tavern and the Robert Morse in
I and they get have to be there by six and you make the show by eight
and our it'll be wonderfully be had 10 percent discount
I mean as you know I'm I any money you can save
is a good idea which also brings us to the opening opening night
love your show which is a thrifty Thursday on August 15th
a jiu jitsu two-for-one I if you
if you come in I basically it's it's half off
half of the ticket price if you come with our partner it's two tickets are
$15 dollars
you're you're saving fifty percent you're seeing are using the opening
night of Shaw
arm following night is the opening act is these the Friday opening which is
always a champagne night and if you come you get champagne
me so that's that's a great place to be so the arm so
thrifty Thursdays at seven o'clock yes
and then on the on the following three Fridays and Saturdays is it
8 o'clock and then there's a Sunday matinee at
at three which is always a nice of that match your clock
2 o'clock yes that's okay you gonna let you gonna be late you'll be late how do
you have think
are now and it's interesting because I'll you know we have a lot of theaters
in the area
most of them are pretty somewhere in time but there are some
there are some differences arm and so it's important to note though so I'm
we've got a matinee on Sunday said to arm
regular shows Friday Saturday at 8 o'clock and of course
that fifty Thursday with the spent 1700 block start
arm and we want to make sure that you stop by and now
tickets are $15 dollars for adults and only five dollars for students
I'm they've keep the price down for
a a number of years now so we try to encourage students to get interested in
the theater
even I that's yes and that's really what we're trying to do so I'll if you wanna
fight a little bit more about you gonna wanna go to tread Yvonne players
dot org or are you can also give a call
a for 10 226 0061
and make your reservations up so
a Beth Driggs is directing this as
this is her first time directing a tap
right also is directed one act if you're one act as a present for small
four sho I'll talk a little bit about for
her style is a director how do you like work with her work with your other
actors
a she's great and and she made it clear
from the beginning that yes the show was a collaborative efforts
that she did that she was just gonna tell us what to do and we were like me
up with smaller something she wanted to know what we were thinking
she went to me she wanted to know what was on the characters
she's always looking for ideas and because %uh that
we keep we keep you improving
on what's going on I think the the characters are
distinctly evolving I mean any kind
of farcical comedy you can have a one-dimensional presentation
one of the neatest things Beth did is really early on
we had to write and present it to the company
who we were and and how we saw our our character
and that is continue to evolve me muriel my character could be very very easily
just as this
constantly angry yelling overbearing woman
that's really not who she is and and it's been a real challenge
to be able to show the STU shadings on every character
and I think I think we've seen some great shows like that from Tremont
21 players arm recently unfortunately will we lost our David Foster yes
on and he passed away but two years ago when he did room service
again farcical comedy that he was all about yes
let's laugh like crazy but let's have some depth to those characters
so that you can relate to them and so that isn't just
you know I %uh the pie in the face type stuff that we're gonna see some
summed up there I think that's really important arm
looking forward do you want to see the show coming up here
I am what else struck you about
maybe this show as opposed to other ones this is your third show it can this is
my third shower
arm what's different about this particular show that
that me to stand out that they meet you want to audition and now that you think
people are going to enjoy
well I think arms its it
it its initially on some shows build
to being funny and this one starts off I mean you
you start laughing right away because it's its
selling aren't what
what I wanted to work with Beth I have worked with that would but when she was
a stage manager and I
and arm lisa is connected that way arm
and I have I enjoy working with different directors
to see the different styles up direction arm
and this has been very very instructive for me said it's been
was 25 years before I stepped on the stage for you
as %uh that's right yes that was the I get a chance to direct
three years ago and on that was the first show you are done guess
and and you know that a fine job with that I think that I am
its that's that's what's exciting about this area
is that we're blessed with a lot a very talented people
are also a lot of people retiring he recites were blessed with a certain
amount of
um a we common business
angels radar people to help support us put in their time their
their effort and the room and I think another are important thing with all
this is that
arm there's such a wide variety the people can go in seizures
oh absolutely I think I seeing I'm you know this show especially
Fox on the fairway with because %uh the writer playwright
Ken Ludwig gave us in case you don't know I gave us
let me a tenor was as for show leading ladies
which tap did a a few years ago
with marcia gillam directing are moon over Buffalo
I guess I'll a couple years ago in in Cleveland above
funny funny piece a post-mortem a lot of shows that
that have good timing but deep care you know the KS
so we have a great can't be happening here arm
right up the street the road here a little bit churchill are almost exactly
the opposite Churchill theatre
the rabbit hole is a very deep arm
drama a and an introspective piece about
a couple who loses a.m. a child
and in fact that they're even having an opportunity
other talk back one day for the the Cedar the Peters in the theater
to talk about loss and the sort of thing which is great opportunity
I we have our if you can hear little noise here again we've got children up
stairs
we're losing you reversing are we have our playmakers up it
Travel Center for the Arts kids doing stuff there are real gang gets wrapped
it or chill
lot a great theater going on in our area arm
and a actually will the sole
are air after we we've done our a show for um
a new group sure shakespeare on here on the short doing
12-night arm in the park so there's a lot of opportunities to get involved in
induced leader in the area
arm have that have either viewed on any shows and they were
belts at this point on I was I was involved in Cambridge I was when we
lived in Lexington Kentucky
I was involved in theater from about time I started college
and I took a hiatus for job reasons
why I've been involved in a number of communities this is just
I just to decided I missed it too much to give it up
and came back John what what made you a get involved
I'm I started doing theater high school and then in college and i actually
trying to make a living at it but I just couldn't
could break in which is why became television director
rather than rather than an actor and I moved back to Maryland to say michael's
two-and-a-half years ago and a friend took me to see
arm %uh the women at tap
ok and I saw in the program that they were going to be
love auditions and I thought of
on unfunded do this and I'll addition I got up apart enough red herring
and I had a great character play and I loved
and my concern and love
