The NITRC Computational Environment (NITRC-CE) takes advantage of cloud computing offered
through Amazon Web Services.
If you do not already have an AWS account, go to the AWS home page at aws.amazon.com.
Click the "Sign Up" button, and follow the instructions to create your AWS account.
Once you are logged in with your account, search for "nitrc" in the AWS Marketplace.
Click on the "NITRC Computational Environment" link.
This brings you to the NITRC-CE home page for the AWS Marketplace.
Make sure the correct region is selected from this list. Generally, you will want to select
the region closest to you to get the fastest network traffic.
Then, click the "Continue" button.
From this page, you will launch the NITRC-CE instance.
If you are familiar with the EC2 console, you can access more detailed configuration
settings by using the "Launch with EC2 Console" tab.
This should not be necessary for routine NITRC-CE use, so we are just going to go with "1-click
Launch."
Review the information shown.
The estimated monthly cost is shown for the extra large instance that is currently selected.
If you change the instance type, the estimated monthly cost is updated.
You will only be charged, however, for the time the instance is running.
For most applications, this will be for much less time, and will cost you a lot less.
Just be sure to stop the instance whenever you are finished using it.
Once you've selected the instance type you need, click the "Launch with 1-Click" button
to deploy the instance.
You will first see a pop-up that indicates that deployment has begun.
Deployment takes a few minutes so please be patient.
You will then see a page that summarizes your deployment.
Note the Instance ID in this summary; you will need to know this if you have more than
one instance running. Click the "Your Software" link to see all
your running instances on "Your Software Subscriptions" page.
Click on this plus sign to see all your active instances.
If you have more than one active instance, look for the one with the ID you just noted.
Make sure the instance is running, and click its "Access Software" link to get to the Web
server that is running your new NITRC-CE instance.
Now you are ready to start a VNC session and use NITRC-CE!
Please watch our companion videos for demonstrations of these.
And remember, you only pay while an instance is running, so when you are finished using
NITRC-CE, you want to stop your instance. Go back to the "Your Software Subscriptions"
AWS page and click the "Manage in AWS Console" link for your running NITRC-CE instance.
The Management Console lists all your instances, and the one that has the ID you noted earlier,
which should be checked, is the one you want to stop.
Right click "running" and select "Stop" to shutdown the instance or "Terminate" to shutdown
the instance and delete the attached storage volume.
