My name is Neda Anasseri and I work for Folsom Cordova Adult School
we named our project "all around the world"
it is a part of the california el civics assessments it's objective number
eleven
it touches on culture and diversity which is perfect for the
for ESL students who are coming into the US
and starting a whole new life here
and adjusting to not only a different language but also
a different culture the way we have it
during the year at the beginning of the year brings an ease to the group and it
is also
almost like an ice breaker because at the comfort that they
bring with their culture
in class and we provide them with thirty hours of
instruction to educate them and teach them about the
cultures and give them an opportunity to answer questions and provide
information about their culture and in addition to that they are interviewing
other classmates
they're excited to come to school so our attendance we have
successful attendance during that time as well they're interested in learning more
they're interested in bringing in
all their traditional clothing they're interested in bringing their
traditional foods
some of them make PowerPoint presentations they bring in their iPad with all these
pictures pictures of
historical figures and historical buildings in
their countries the student came in to show appreciation
and wanted to know a little bit more about why we conduct
their culture assessment and to
also follow up with how much she appreciated it
during the presentation she says I had to speak English so I was able to
explain my culture in English
this particular assessment will always
be apart of the classes at our school
because of the positive feedback that we get from it
