We begin with Lions making a global impact.
Japan recently marked the one-year anniversary
of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated
parts of the country.
Mobilized by LCIF, Lions worldwide have contributed
more than $21 million U.S. to aid
Japanese Lions in immediate disaster relief,
and plans for rebuilding are well under way.
In Haiti, Lions have made it a priority
to help rebuild the health care system.
LCIF worked with partners to open
a new national school of nursing.
- A good school of nurses
is fundamental
for the future of Haiti.
- Lions are proud to help families
move from tent cities into 1,000 new permanent homes.
- I am grateful to the Lions
for this house.
It has helped my family so much.

- New projects are underway to build schools as well.

- Lions have been here
from the beginning, and we'll
be here as long as it takes.
- Posters from 60 countries,
including Brazil, China, Colombia,
Iceland, South Africa,
and the United States demonstrate
that children know peace.
Twenty-three merit award winners were selected
from among more than 350,000 entries submitted
to this year's International Peace Poster contest.
- I now call upon
our international grand prize peace poster winner,
Trisha Co Reyes.
- Thirteen-year-old Trisha Co Reyes from the Philippines
drew the grand prize-winning poster.
The young artist was honored at Lions Day
with the United Nations in New York in March.
- I am humbled that through
my artwork, I am able to convey
a message of peace,
in the eyes of a young child.
As you can see, in my painting, the hidden child is me
envisioning children all over the world who have love,
freedom, unity, and peace.
- Also honored at the U.N. event
was 12-year-old Mikaela Smith from Indiana,
grand prize winner
of the 2011-12 Lions International essay contest
for students with visual impairments.
- I believe that watching a child is
the best example that shows
children know peace.
Although I am blind, I can hear
and feel their laughter as they frolic together
in the summer breeze.
I can hear them suggest a food drive for the homeless shelter.
I can hear them working together in unison.
