For me the most important part of the day as a trumpet player is the warmup. First thing
I do is I buzz the lips. Then I get into some soft chromatic fragments. The Herbert L. Clarke
technical studies. Triple tonguing. I want to talk about playing the blues. You lock
in on the time, if you agree on where your eighth notes are it can take you in many different
directions. I don't really try to dictate the harmony so much, I mainly play over the
key. By playing over a montunos or a traditional latin montunos. I try to draw inspiration
from great latin singers, also great latin percussionists—the rhythms they play.
