For most of my 19 years observing and reporting on the research industry, it would have been
unthinkable for Nielsen, known as the TV ratings company, and Arbitron, the radio ratings company,
to be under one roof.
On Tuesday, in a surprising but not shocking announcement, Nielsen said it is buying Arbitron
for $1.26 billion.
The smaller of the two competitors, Arbitron has regularly been biting Nielsen at its knees.
It's hard to know what convinced Arbitron to sell at this point.
Arbitron will improve Nielsen's measurement of streaming audio and out-of-home.
On Monday, Arbitron had promoted EVP & COO Sean Cramer to CEO effective Jan. 1.
How vital is Big Data? Big enough for the German government to provide financial support
for a survey on the use of and potential for Big Data.
The study concluded three major opportunities for its use at German companies.
One, Big Data fosters more effective business management, like more precise demand forecasting
and greater efficiency through automated procedures.
Second, it facilitates mass customization, and third, more intelligent products.
Thanks to the family of George Gallup which recently donated 200 boxes of his personal
papers to the University of Iowa, we're beginning to learn details that set the foundation for
our industry.
Gallup died in 1984, but in 1932 while an advertising executive, he more or less masterminded
the election of his mother-in-law as IA's Secretary of State.
Gallup informally polled voters and discovered highway safety to be a top concern. She ran
on that issue and became the first woman and first Democrat in 76 years to hold the office.
Nielsen and Twitter said they will introduce Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings for the U.S. market
next fall. It will be a syndicated standard metric "around the reach of the TV conversation
on Twitter."
The company that runs the U.S. NASDAQ exchange is acquiring Thomson Reuters for $390 million.
