Hello! In our media flooded world we are exposed
a lot to the concept of good vs. evil. Most of us would like to identify ourselves with
the good character, but in most of the real-life-like shows, it might be really hard
to understand who the good guy is, assuming there is one.
According to the bible (the Old Testament): "the imagination of man's heart is evil from
his youth", "יצר לב האדם רע מנעוריו". We, as people, want to believe there's good
in everybody's heart, for we want to have hope in human kind.
A wise fictional uncle once said: "with great power, comes great responsibility." According
to pop culture, after gaining power there are two ways to go, live the lonely life of
a superhero or getting corrupted by it. Last time we discussed the story of Light,
who decides to use his power to save the world from the evil. Whether he started as a villain
or a hero is for you to decide, but as soon as the second episode ends it is clear, the
power turned him mad. After the second episode, he is defiantly not a good guy anymore.
You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
This case are still simple, it is still pretty easy to understand who is good and who is
evil. Let's imagine a series in which Light does not kill that guy on the TV, in which
he kills only criminals. It could have been a boring series to watch because L would have
had no leads and no conflict would have occurred, but Light would still have the benefit of
the doubt, is he doing good? Is he doing evil? In the Spiderman series there is a villain
called "The Lizard", a mutated genetics professor who finds a way to turn normal people into
lizard people, who are basically the same as normal people with a few exceptions: they
are stronger, have tails, scales and other lizard characteristics, but most importantly,
they can heal very quickly. Like some lizards, they can grow back limbs that were cut off
or heal other critical wounds in a few minutes. The Lizard wants to share that new power with
the rest of humanity, to take it to the next step in evolution. He want to do good as well,
and his only sin is not asking for permission. Is he good? He wants to make life much more
bearable. Is he evil? He wants to turn humankind into monsters.
Good and evil are complicated concepts, but that's not a reason to give up. That's a reason
to keep looking for answers and keep thinking. Try your best to be your best but be cautious-
the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
