Hello. I am Joan Borja and I am going to be talking about the education system in the territory of the Vives University Network.
The diversity is one of the identifying values of the Vives University Network.
These 21 universities form the solid made up network of promise and links to the same linguistic system.
But the universities of the Vives Network are assigned to the reality of four different states: Italian, French, Andorran and Spanish.
And the administrative diversity logically brings about the corresponding differences with reference to educative models.
In the case of the University of Sassari, the reference education system is Italy’s, which has the following phases:
The preschool education, nursery school (Scuola dell’Infancia), is non-mandatory education from 3 to 6 years.
Primary school (Scuola Primaria), from 6 to 11 years.
Secondary education is divided in: secondary school (Scuola Seondaria Di Primo Grado) from 11 to 14 years;
and secondary school (Scuola Secondaria Di Secondo Grado) from 14 to 19 years.
This Scuola Secondaria Di Secondo Grado can be studied in 3 types of schools, depending on the study orientation:
The Liceo, Istituti tecnici or Istituti professionali
Finally, in higher education, the Italian education system offers the options of going to university or to a superior school of art,
music and dance (l’Alta formazione artistica, musicale e coreutica) and the higher technical school (Istituti tecnici superiori). 15 Italian university studies are usually made up of three years for a Bachelor’s degree (Laurea) and two more for a Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale)
In the case of the University of Perpignan, we should refer to the French education system which has the following structure:
The first phase is nursery school from 3 to 6 years.
Children go to primary school between 6 and 11 years of age (the same as the Italian system, but one year less than the Andorran, Catalan, Balearic and Valencian education systems).
Middle school (Collège) is from 11 to 15 years (beginning and finishing a year before secondary school
of the Andorran education system or the Compulsory Secondary Education, ESO, in Catalan, Balearic and Valencian education systems)
Secondary school (lyceé) is from 15 to 18 years and it is not mandatory. It is made up of three years which can be specialized in general, technology or professional fields.
And, finally, university, which has a structure that depends on the different university disciplines,
but it is usually three years for the bachelor degree and two further years for Master’s.
After two years of higher education, students obtain a diploma in General University Studies, then they continue their studies for another year.
They can obtain a degree by doing one extra as a Master’s degree and at the end of a fifth year a teaching degree or Master’s.
With reference to the University of Andorra, we should mention a context that the Andorran, French and Spanish education systems share.
In schools with French and Spanish education systems, it is required to have what is called Andorran training that guarantees learning the Catalan language, and the media
history, geography, culture and institutions of Andorra. 29 In the case of the Andorran education system, the phases are: nursery school from 3 to 6 years, primary school from 6 to 12 years,
secondary school from 12 to 16 years and baccalaureate from 16 to 18 years. 31 At the University of Andorra students can study three years, a bachelor’s degree, which is what gives students access to Master’s.
The Valencian, Catalan and Balearic education systems have the same education phases. They are:
Nursery school from 0 to 3 years and 3 to 6 years. Education from 3 to 6 years is not mandatory, but (not like education from 0-3 years) is generalized and free.
Primary education from 6 to 12 years of age is structured in three cycles: an initial cycle (first and second year), intermediate cycle (third and fourth year) and superior cycle (fifth and sixth year).
Mandatory secondary education (known as ESO) is from 12 to 16.
Four modalities can be chosen in Baccalaureate (from 16 to 18): the arts, science and technology, humanities and social sciences. 37 When students take the second year of baccalaureate in Valencian, Balearic and Catalan schools, they can do a university entrance exam (PAU) to access university studies.
The degree each student chooses depends on the results they obtain.
In other words, we can say that to access university, PAU is the way.
Once at university, the degrees usually last four academic years (240 credits) that then allows access to a Master’s
(one or two years, between 60 or 120 further credits) and, finally, PhD.
Degrees in architecture, odontology, veterinary and pharmacy are exceptions as they are five years long. Medicine is six. 43 Therefore, diversity. Diversity of the universities, contexts, administration and education systems all in the same «European Higher Education Area ».
Diversity…diversity is, indeed, an identifying value of Western Mediterranean and Europe.
It is a representative value for the Vives University Network: diversity in education.
