Gracefully seated at the mouth of the river that bears its name, the city of Pascagoula
has long been known as an industrial powerhouse. But Pascagoula has another side of its story
to share. That of its natural amenities, convenience in traveling and shopping, strong healthcare
and education, and enriching culture. That other side may be a surprise to some outside
the city, but resident Pascagoulans can and will tell you what makes their city a great
place to live work and play. The many reasons they're Pascagoula Proud.
Everywhere I go, the first thing I say, and I'm very proud to say it is, I'm from Pascagoula,
Mississippi. I'm a product of Pascagoula Schools, graduate
from Pascagoula High School, left and went to college, and then returned to Pascagoula
schools and became a teacher and taught in the district for a little over ten years.
Now I'm a parent of a child in the Pascagoula schools. As a parent I see the dedication
and support from a whole new perspective. I see what they are doing to make sure that
my child has the necessary skills and is successful each year.
And I just see you know a very different perspective as a parent.
We have so many things to offer as far as extracurricular activities, our facilities
are beautiful, the technology is stat-of-the-art. And so you know those are a lot of the really
pluses of our public schools. Private school is an option that we can choose here in Pascagoula
so we chose that route. And they've been there since they were like three years old and we
absolutely love it. You can trust the people in Pascagoula and in the community to take
care of your children. They get a lot of one on one attention
and you know I can't say enough about the school system in Pascagoula because it's just
great. When the weather is nice and cool and we know
it's a full moon we like to camp at Horn Island. They have beautiful sand dunes in the evening
when the sun is setting and the stars begin to come out and your sitting at the top of
the dunes and the stars and the moon just light up the sky it's a beautiful sight.
We have an amazing time at the islands. It's you know hop in the boat and your 15 minutes
away from paradise in my opinion. It's secluded and it's not crowded like you would get at
the other beach areas. It's like our own little private island.
In Pascagoula that's got to be one of the big drawing points to this city is your right
on the water. You have so many opportunities you can go out deep sea fishing, you can fish
up river, the hunting opportunities are real close by. It's just a great attribute to this
city and it provides a lot of activities for a lot of people.
The rec program, they do a very good job with our youth in providing a lot of opportunities
for kids of different ages and different sports activities that they like to do. We have a
great soccer program, peewee football program, our Dixie youth baseball program is second
to none, the disc golf course over at IG Levy Park is a big activity. I see a lot of people
out their participating in that. The skate park anytime you ride by there there are a
lot of kids out there having fun and doing their trucks. And we also have beach volleyball
out at the Beach Park. I think that's a great opportunity for people to get out and enjoy
the outdoors. Anchor Square has lots of new shops restaurants
all sorts of places to shop and eat and other activities as well so it's been a lot of fun
having that right down the street. It's easy to get in and out of and it's a great place
to shop. We were welcomed almost in open arms by the
community and a lot of people in the community, the hospital, my partners.
You know one thing that kind of has disappeared somewhat across America is the old fashioned
neighborhoods. Kids on their bike until the street light comes on and that sort of thing
and you still see that in Pascagoula. There's an iconic scenery place for me in
Pascagoula is literally just to drive down Beach Boulevard
It's very community oriented. I can't stress enough how important it is for me to live
in a community where everybody really does know you.
The thing I love about Pascagoula for sure is the People. I wouldn't want to live anywhere
else. Well Ingalls Shipbuilding is going on 75 years
old, it started in 1938. It's been a pillar in this community. We have 10000 employees
who come to work every day and if you don't work there you have relatives friends and
neighbors who definitely work there every day.
The Pascagoula Refinery is Chevron's largest US refinery. It produces millions of gallons
gasoline and other products every day. It's been a part of Pascagoula since 1963. And
while we are one of the larger employers in the area, our employees don't just work here.
They live here and they invest their time here. In addition to investing their time,
chevron gives about a million dollars back to the community every year to help support
the things that make Pascagoula great like little league teams, festivals, and education
at every level. Living in Pascagoula is a good thing for me.
I don't have to live in Mobile and commute, so the commute is really really, you know
the timing is great. Being able to live, to work, and I guess play
to a certain extent all in the same city in Pascagoula, its great, it couldn't be any
more convenient. From the hospital's perspective we pretty
much take care of you from the day you are born until the day you pass. We have great
pediatric services, great OB services, as you go into your adult years, great health
maintenance and prevention, a good network of primary care doctors. We have full cardiac,
neurology, cancer service lines, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, pretty much the full gamut.
It's amazing to see the efforts that our local leaders are putting in to new innovative ways
to serve their community and to make life better.
I think the future of Pascagoula is really bright. We've been working hard for the last
several years to improve the quality of life of our residences. So we've done a lot and
we have a lot on the drawing board. That's actually a great example of why I'm
Pascagoula Proud, because of the way that we have rebuilt ourselves and re-identified
ourselves as this kind of up and coming community, lots of things to do and beautiful things
to see. After about a year of living here I actually
had the opportunity to go back. We sat down and talked about it and she said you know
I really don't want to leave. I want to raise my children here. This is home and I love
it. The Pascagoula area down at the beach is by
far my favorite to spend time with my family and my children and that's why I'm Pascagoula
Proud. I'm very happy with my child's education,
all my children's education, it's a great place to work, and that's why I'm Pascagoula
Proud. I love where I live and I love the people
where I live and that's why I'm Pascagoula Proud.
The beautiful neighborhoods, the beach front the great people that live here, the schools,
all those things make me Pascagoula Proud. You know when you look at Pascagoula it's
very diverse and the cultures are very diverse and the races are very diverse, and what people
do for a living. And raising my family here I'm very comfortable in this atmosphere. It's
a great place to raise a family, it's a very safe place.
Pascagoula is growing, there are a lot of things to do, great eateries, great unique
boutiques to shop. People are sitting on their porch in the morning
having coffee, saying hello as they go to work, and that's the type of atmosphere I
want to live in. Those are the priceless possessions that we have here in Pascagoula and that's
why I'm Pascagoula Proud. The people here really want to get involved
and they really have a love for their community and I think that's what makes me Pascagoula
Proud. It's a great place to raise a family and that's
why I'm Pascagoula Proud The people, the recreation, everything there
is to do in Pascagoula, the Southern hospitality, that's what makes me Pascagoula Proud.
Pascagoula is just a beautiful place to live, the Gulf of Mexico is right at your back door,
it has a lot of friendly and familiar faces and that's why I'm Pascagoula Proud.
