\f0\fs24 \cf0 Mission and Vision statements\ with Tom Verdery, retired Procter & Gamble
executive\ \
Hi I\'92m Tom Verdery with the Soderquist Center and I\'92m pleased to visit with you
today on two very important topics. And that is mission and vision statements. What I\'92m
going to share with you is not only what is a mission and vision statement, but in addition
to that, give you some examples of great mission and vision statements in organizations both
large and small. And then also to find how to write an effective mission and vision statement.
Well, let me start first of all with what is a mission statement? A mission statement
is really, your purpose. It\'92s kind of your moral and corporate compass to how you\'92re
going to be effective. And so think of it as what you stand for and what your reason
for business is today. Your vision is very different. Your vision is, where do I want
to take my business in the next three to five years? What are my goals? What are my aspirations?
As you think about effective mission statements, it\'92s always great to capture ones that
not only inspire the organization, but also aspire to get those accomplished. Let me give
you an example of a great mission statement. The Coca-Cola Company says that they \'93exist
to benefit and refresh everyone\'94 it touches. When you think about the Coca-Cola Company,
what\'92s wonderful about t that mission statement is that they truly think about their business
as not just selling a can of soda pop, but also really refreshing and having enjoyment
with all people. It\'92s what they do best and it\'92s what they inspire people to do.
Let me share with you some examples of great vision statements of where you want to stretch
out to do in the next three to five years. From a couple of small organizations that
have been very effective in what they\'92ve done in their organizations. \'93In 2015,
George\'92s will be rated as a 5-star restaurant (in the greater Detroit area) by consistently
providing perfectly prepared food and outstanding service\'94. Another example, again stating
in 2015, the \'93Tiny Tots Diaper Service will be the top grossing diaper service in
Chicago by providing reliable, affordable service for moms.\'94 What I love about those
two vision statements is that they do a great job of not only talking about what they want
to achieve, but why they believe it\'92s important to them. And so now as you\'92re thinking
about great example of a great mission and vision statement, let me give you a few tips
on how to write one. In a mission statement should be 20 words or less. It should be defining
what is your core competency in your organization or what am I best at. It should be, what is
most important to me in the organization and it should inspire you and your organization
to the kind of work that you feel best about doing. In writing a vision statement, you
should start by thinking about, where do you want to be in three to five years in your
organization and what do you want to accomplish. And write it in 20 words or less. And you\'92re
probably wondering why am I even suggesting 20 words. It\'92s important when you think
about a mission and vision statement, that your people in your organization remember
what you\'92ve created so they can actually execute, live, and believe in what you do.
And so by writing a very short but powerful mission and vision statement, they\'92ll capture
that. So best of luck to you as you start to work on your mission and vision statement
and understand that this is the guiding post and guiding work that you\'92ll do to inspiring
and having aspirations for your organization in the years to come.}
