Today we welcome you to our grand opening of the Regionals component, which is
a new phase in our Center System operations. And I want to welcome our distinguished guests,
our distinguished speakers today-- thank you all for taking the time to come out and visit us.
It's so exciting to be here today as we celebrate this new chapter in the NLECTC Systems history.
These centers will serve as the point of entry to the resources of the NLECTC System
for criminal justice agencies, and will be able to direct those agencies to the technology
assistance resources that they need.
First of all, let me say congratulations to this wonderful installation;
this is tremendous for the city of Rockville,
tremendous for the county, tremendous for the country.
Law enforcement,
criminal justice,
the whole notion of forensic science is so essential
in keeping our
country, our Nation, our city, our town safe.
We're very proud to have this opportunity. We thank NIJ and the Office of Justice
Programs for the opportunity
to host this event and to operate the new center.
As you can imagine with a national mission,
it's very challenging
reaching out to all the agencies. We've got a huge challenge ahead of us and we're going to
work very very hard
reaching out to those agencies, making sure that they know what resources are available
at NIJ, through the NLECTC System, through other programs; making sure that we're trying
to get that information to them and finding resources that they actually need.
My task is to support those agencies in Alaska--the whole criminal justice
network
network up there-- and trying to identify new technologies that will help them do their jobs more efficiently
and effectively.
And so far we've made some very good progress in that area,
and it's due to the
extensive network
and partnerships of the other centers, the Centers of Excellence,
DHS, and others that assist us in that effort.
