Sometimes when I start painting,
I start by mixing the colors 'cause if I have that pool
of color to start with, I do better work.
This is my studio.
It's my very favorite place to be in the world.
I couldn't for a long time figure out why I wanted
to paint these female matadors.
This bull's going to come after her.
It's just in the shadow now, but it's coming.
But she's ready for it and ready to take on
whatever comes her way ... and do it beautifully.
I did a painting last year, "Be Where Your Feet Are,"
about not letting my mind be in the future
or in the past worrying about things,
but actually living in the moment.
Kids start getting home at 2:00.
Tallulah gets out at 2:15, so she's home by 2:30.
I didn't ever want to shut my kids out
and make my career separate,
so, starting when they were little, tiny,
they were always in the studio with me.
Some of our best family times
have been when we were working together in the studio.
That's funny. We were all trying to draw a dove,
and none of us could draw a dove;
they were all these goofy birds.
We were like, "That doesn't work."
And this one was about listening.
I was very determined and realized that anything I focused
on—I could do anything I wanted to do.
I always had the support of my husband,
number one, who wanted me to pursue this
and was really good at picking up the slack, never saying,
"Get in there and clean that house."
I don't know why more people don't do this; it's stinkin' fun.
I used to think that there was a thing that
I was supposed to be that I didn't quite fit.
And one day I realized I totally made that up—
that God wants me to be an individual,
but doing that with what I've been given.
I am fun (laughs).
I'm spontaneous, yet disciplined.
I'm the mother of three beautiful girls.
My name is Cassandra Barney,
and I am a Mormon.
