Hi Today I wanted to talk about a book that I
finished yesterday. So, I’ve been reading it for the past month.
Erm, I originally bought it because it was part of a two for seven pound deal in a supermarket.
Err, it wasn’t what I originally intended to buy, I actually bought The Fault In Our
Stars by John Green, thought I may as well get another book if
it’s in a two for seven. I know that’s how they tie you in but I’m
a sucker for it! So I had a look at what other ones were there,
and I ended up buying this one!
Erm, it’s called The Yard. It’s by a guy called Alex Grecian.
It’s set in Victorian London times, Erm, just after Jack the Ripper,
And his… stuff.
They make references to Jack the ripper, but it’s not necessarily about Jack the Ripper.
So don’t buy it if… he’s the dude you like.
It’s told from the perspective of about … five people.
Sometimes more. It’s in third person though.
But it switches between the people’s lives and sometimes you get the same event
Told from different views. If that makes sense…erm.
So, it starts out with Inspector Little’s body being found.
And then, it goes on from there, to try and find out whether
He was murdered by someone to do with a case he was working on,
Or if it was a random killing, or if it’s Jack the Ripper back,
But to be honest they don’t Investigate that too much because it doesn’t
seem like Jack the Ripper’s MO
That’s the basics of it.
I read the back of it And I thought that would be interesting to
me. I’ve not read too many ***
Mystery books But erm
I just thought it would be interesting because it was set in a different time and I like
stuff that’s set in the olden days So I thought I’d give it a go.
What I found interesting was err, Obviously in Victorian times policing wasn’t
the same as it is now So, there’s a character in this called Dr
Kingsley and he’s the guy Who sort of
Does post mortems which was unheard of really At that time and he also investigates further
into Forensic science
So, getting fingerprints from Weapons etc
So that was quite cool. But I have to say that was probably the only
thing I liked about this book Erm
I found it Very
Slow Not necessarily in moving from scene to scene,
but slow because You’re told who the murderer is
Within the first few chapters Because its also told from his… or her?
Not going to spoil it Erm, cos it’s told from his or hers point
of view as well You know
Who they are Very quickly into the book and I found that
frustrating because Then I spent the rest of the book just thinking
when are they gonna catch This person
Because You already know so much about them and then
when they make obvious mistakes I found it very
Frustrating. I don’t know if it’s just cos I’m an impatient person
Erm But it was very annoying.
And I felt like
The language Was a bit
Over exaggerated so they explained Things that they didn’t need to explain
And you know it was a bit long winded, they took ages to get to the point.
When… I’m a very impatient person. So maybe that was just it.
Maybe that’s why I didn’t like that bit. I actually really struggled to finish this
book. I thought about giving up
About half way through I was gonna..
I didn’t see the point in carrying on cos I already knew who the murderer was
And all it seemed to be was Erm a number of
Events happening that made them almost catch the person but never really catch the person
Kinda always know that they’re going to catch the person, probably.
Because, you know, it’s a book. Yeah, so I almost gave up, but I carried on
, because I don’t think It’s fair to judge a whole book
By half the book So I carried on, and I finished it yesterday
Erm and I’m afraid to say it didn’t improve the opinion
That I have of it Before I’ve gotten half way into book, thought
about giving up And then carried on, and then discovered I
actually did like the book! Erm
Sometimes it just takes a bit of work. Erm, but this was not one of those books I’m
afraid. It just, it did not hold my interest at all.
And I found myself just skimming over the last few chapters because I just wanted to
get it out the way. I would like to point out.
That erm That I don’t normally read this genre book,
so, There is a possibility that it’s just that
I don’t like this Genre
Maybe, I think I expected more Of this type of book?
I thought When it said
On the cover you know Mystery, whodunit?, oh yeah,
On the side it says a compelling whodunit? I thought there would be more mystery and
more Whodunit
When we already know whodunit Erm, so
You have to bare that in mind. Overall I will give this book
A two out of five Erm , because I liked the premise, I liked
where it was planning to go I just didn’t enjoy the journey in the end.
