Hey guys, First on all... SURPRISE!
Anyone who say Jarrod's update the other day
would know I wasn't meant to be uploading a video today.
Also, just wanted to give a quick welcome to
Carl and Nicole, who've just joined the channel.
I look forward to working with both of you :)
So, today's topic is body image.
For me, having Cerebral Palsy has and hasn't had an effect
on my feelings about my body image.
Like, because of my condition
my right hand is pretty much non-functional.
I can't turn it over, it's always stiff and doesn't really do much,
and also when I walk, it's... you can tell that I'm always pretty rigid.
but stuff like that doesn't really bother me.
It's never made me self-concious or anything like that.
It's more things like eating.
I get really self-concious when I eat, because it's REALLY REALLY
difficult for me to eat without making even the tiniest bit of mess.
So that's made me a bit self-concious throughout my life.
I don't eat in public,
I do whatever I can not to eat in front of people I don't really know
I remember at school I used to either sit in the corner
to eat my lunch where no one could see me
or simply just wait til I got home,
which was a pain because by the end on the day I was starving!
When I started uni, it was the same thing.
I wouldn't eat or drink in front of people.
I remember one of my friends
and you know exactly who you are if you're watching this
would make me eat just something little
bit by bit to get me used to eating in front of people
and slowly that helped.
So that's really the biggest issue I've had with
body image and having Cerebral Palsy.
now the other issue I've had with body image...
I don't know if you would class this as body image
but I do, which is my voice.
As you can probably tell,
my voice is a bit slurry because of my Cerebral Palsy
When I was younger it actually a lot worse
which made me even more self-concious about communicating with people.
I remember I never used to call anyone on the phone
answer the phone or anything like that
It was only once I started my Social Work degree
that I started to get over this
because obviously a big component of being a Social Worker is
having good communication skills particularly over the phone.
So while I was doing my placement at a hospital in Sydney
that really gave me the opportunity to overcome my insecurities about my speech.
Now, I'm not saying that I don't still get self-concious
If there's any way I can get out of using the phone
to contact someone, I'll do it
either by email, or even in person I find it's easier.
I guees that's me for this week.
