Make your avatar look its best by shopping for new clothes, hair, shoes... even an entirely
new avatar! Fashions, home furnishings — and everything
in between — can be bought using Linden Dollars. Check out the “Buying Linden Dollars”
tutorial to learn more about getting virtual currency.
Most items in Second Life are created by Residents. When you buy from this community of “content
creators,” you’re supporting small businesses! Second Life shopping is a familiar experience.
Just like in real life, you can visit different stores, look through merchandise, and even
talk to the shop owner! See something you like? Just click or right-click
on it to get the price or to buy. For purchases inside Second Life, your items
will appear in your Inventory. You can see them under the “Recent” tab.
Many Second Life shops can also be found on the Web. Go to the Marketplace to search for
any item you desire. Get in-depth information on any item by clicking
on it. You’ll find screenshots of the item, as
well as product reviews from other Second Life residents.
Ready to buy? Click the Add To Cart button and then proceed to the Checkout Cart to place
your order. That’s it! Your item is now queued for delivery.
You’ll be notified inside Second Life once it arrives.
Check your Inventory to find your item using the “Received Items” section.
Remember that your newest purchases will also be found under the “Recent tab” in your
Inventory. Some items may also have related notecards.
Be sure to read these, as they may contain instructions to help you use your new purchase.
Also note that, for some purchases, you may receive a box that needs to be opened first
to get your clothing or items. Boxes can be designed to automatically unpack,
but if that option isn’t available, here’s what to do. Go to your inventory and first
drag the box inworld to make it available. Right-click the box and select “Open,”
then click “Copy to inventory.” A folder of the same name will appear in your inventory.
You can also click “Copy And Wear” to wear your new duds!
You can’t unpack boxes on all land... If you have a Linden Home or your own land,
you can unpack your box there... or there are public “sandboxes” that you can also
use. Just look for “sandbox” in the Search Places tab to find one near you!
Now that you know how to shop in Second Life, try it out and choose some cool new clothes
— or maybe even a new house! Have fun building your wardrobe and home in Second Life!
