Erik: How have your ongoing trips to china shaped what you believe is possible in making
a difference in the world?
Andrew: The size of the opportunity in china is staggering, absolutely staggering. So my
trips to china have shown me a lot in terms of the rapid pace of development there, the
exciting opportunity that exists in Asia. But I think more than anything what its taught
me is we’ve been waiting a long time for the green energy solution trying to change
the source, everything in China… well China’s profile of energy or electricity generation
is seventy percent coal, probably not changing in near the future, but the opportunities
for things like energy efficiency in China are so astounding you could probably go into
virtually any manufacturing plant and improve their energy efficiency fifty percent tomorrow
- if your dealing with the export economy. And that’s really changed my view. I knew
things were really in need of improvement, I didn’t know the opportunities were going
to be as easy as they are. Now that doesn’t mean that it’s actually easy to change the
behavior or to get people to adopt the technological changes that need to happen but the opportunities
are just really ripe and easy to go for. So that’s where my next few years are leading
me is really tackling that problem.
Erik: And you’re heading there soon.
Andrew: Going to spend the summer there.
Erik: And what will you be doing this summer?
Andrew: Working with Chinese factories to reduce their energy use and working with them
to find cleaning production opportunities outside of energy so water, toxics, materials
used all sorts of things to try and say the era of dirty manufacturing is over and lets,
lets change it.
