Hi, Tafadzwa again.
Right now we are standing in front of the Dean Rusk International Studies Center in Duke Residence Hall.
The Dean Rusk program is named after our distinguished alumnus Dean Rusk,
class of 1931.
who served as the secretary of state for the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.
The Dean Rusk program is committed to creating an international awareness through conferences,
cultural presentations,
lectures,
and student travel grants. The Dean Rusk center
gives over
150,000 each year for Davidson students
for independent research and travel.
This department also provides guidance for Davidson students
planning to travel or study abroad,
on the Davidson Classics Trip,
semester in India,
one of the pre-med trips, a summer in Cambridge,
or another program through Davidson or with another college or university. Over 80% of Davidson students
will choose to study abroad, and approximately 65% of each class will choose to study abroad at some point during the semester or summer.
Our study abroad department assists in every step of the process,
finding the right
program,
applying, supporting students while abroad.
The office also provides support to over 70 Davidson students
who hail from about 56 different countries outside the US.
The Dean Rusk Center is
the first LEED certified building on campus.
LEED is a national certification that recognizes
environmentally friendly buildings.
All buildings constructed since the Dean Rusk Center and in the future
will be LEED certified.
This building
is also a site for theme halls. Students can read and submit a proposal
to live and learn together about an international issue, through weekly
meetings and other events that promote awareness of issues of
particular interest, like youth in Africa, or global water issues.
