>> We all know that students are the future,
the future of society but also the future of our disciplines.
Good teachers are some
of the most influential people we ever meet.
We all know a good teacher who inspired us and set us
on the path to where we are today.
York is the third largest university in Canada.
This offers a huge potential for impact,
a chance to influence the next generation and the opportunity
to inspire others with a love for our disciplines.
The teaching commons offers us all a chance to engage
in improving the student experience at York.
Between us we have a wealth of experience, enthusiasm
and expertise ready to help support students
in the development of our subjects.
The teaching commons at York inspires excellence in teaching
and learning through engaging teachers, programs, faculties,
the university as a whole in collaborative dialogue
and reflective practice.
The teaching commons is made
up of everyone involved in teaching at York.
If you teach or supervise undergrad
or postgrad students, this means you.
We work with partners across the whole university.
We have four key areas of responsibility.
These help us to focus our efforts on reaching
as many people involved in teaching and learning at York
as we can, working at a strategic level
with individual teachers and their program teams.
We engage in, support and share university level teaching
and research as we champion research informed
reflective practice.
We have set ourselves an ambitious agenda
for the next four years with four key priorities.
We want the teaching commons to be the hub
of teaching excellence at York.
This is the place to share your good practice,
to find out what's going on within and beyond York,
to learn from and with your colleagues.
At York we have many inspirational
and experienced teachers,
several of whom have been rewarded with awards.
We want to engage those award winners and we want to ensure
that all our excellent teachers are recognized
within and beyond York.
Research and teaching go hand in hand
in large universities such as ours.
The teaching commons will encourage us all
to give teaching the attention it deserves with policies aimed
at strengthening the culture of teaching and learning.
As researchers we value evidence,
as teachers we use our skills as researchers
and as experts in our field.
The teaching commons will champion the skills
and practices of the reflective evidence informed researcher
in York's approach to teaching.
So if you share our passion for teaching,
care about our responsibilities as custodians of our disciplines
and want to engage with the teaching commons,
we're waiting to hear from you.
