OSBY DAVIS, VALLEJO MAYOR: Development and environment are not two separate things
they go together.
I come from a time, long time ago in politics when
you thought that
development and environment
were enemies
and they were always fighting each other
but we've come a long way and now we realize that they go hand-in-hand.
DEBBIE RAPHAEL, DTSC: We're here because the Navy is getting recognized by the Department of Defense for the most
impressive greenery remediation project...cleanup project in the country.
So this is
truly a celebration of national proportions. Today were focusing on
a very small part of the island but a very significant one in terms of habitat
restoration
and that is an old landfill that was closed down and then
cleaned up
and restored to the point where now we have hiking trails
and access for anybody.
LAURA DUCHNAK, NAVAY BRAC OFFICE: To reach the level of Secretary of Defense award
they had to compete with all the other military services, open bases as well as
closed bases.
MYRNA HAYES, LOCAL RESIDENT: The state Land staff were the
first to really champion this idea...
was that you could mix
access to the environment
to the beautiful world that was on that western side that had
been seen by few people.
CHIP GRIBBLE, DTSC: Creating a way of
having people access that and
use that for recreation without destroying what they came to see was a
really delicate balance and
this is what we came up with.
It requires a lot of
careful coordination with
lot of different agencies.
AUDIO FROM CEREMONY: Again we appreciate all your efforts because they provided the public input
and keeps us on our toes and again helped to make these cleanups
more robust and safer for the community so thanks again.
DWIGHT GEMAR,DEVELOPER: Through the efforts of the restoration advisory board...
you know they and state lands commission they insisted that public
access be granted especially to the western shoreline of the Mare
island. It's been a fine job in and as project manager it was my
opportunity to oversee that work and it really turned out well.
DEBBIE RAPHAEL, DTSC: Now when we go out to that site and we have access to it as the public
and ability to watch the birds and look at the views, that
kernel, that start,
was from the community voice.
DTSC comes and responds to the community,
make sure the site gets cleaned up,
The Navy takes great pride
because they become partners with DTSC
and everyone benefits.
