Welcome to 2002.
What can I say? Ladies and gentlemen, Joey Tempest!
Welcome.
Thanks.
This is great.
New album, which is called "Joey Tempest".
How more personal can you get?
Not that much more.
It includes my three eras, I think. That's why I wanted to call it that.
There's a bit of a Europe feeling...
a feeling of "A Place to Call Home", which was a singer-songwriter album...
and some new influences from British bands.
Yeah.
We talked earlier on, you mentioned it's a rougher sound than your previous solo work.
A bit tougher. A bit of a Europe feeling. I started out in a rock band.
I had my first band when I was 11. We were called Made in Hong Kong.
But we only had one song.
That might be a problem if you're going out on tour.
Exactly.
You mentioned your career.
How has Joey Tempest changed from 1979 to 2002? You're back to a more rockier sound.
Yeah, that's how I started.
Five albums with Europe. It was a big era. World tours. everything. Really fun.
Absolutely.
Then in the 90s I started to get a more Tom Petty-like sound...
and went to Nashville and did two more calmer albums.
But like I said, it's a bit tougher again now.
I feel like I wanna rock a little again.
Sounds good. We're gonna play "Forgiven" now.
We can talk about that later, we'll play the song first.
Here is Joey Tempest with "Forgiven".
Great song. I just got some info about Joey's microphone stand in that video.
Was it the original mic stand from "The Final Countdown"?
That's right. I'm almost certain that's it. It was handbuilt especially for me.
Awesome.
Because I wanted to do some tricks with it. We used it in the "Final Countdown" video.
This is rock history, people! Can't say anymore than that.
It hung inside the Hard Rock Cafe in Stockholm?
I just went there and took it.
If the owners of Hard Rock Cafe are watching this, it was...
It was me. It was me! I took it.
You lived in Dublin for a while. You live in London now.
Musically speaking, I think there's a big city sound in some of your material.
Are you a big city soul who doesn't feel comfortable with trees around you?
No, it got a bit slow out on the heathland in Ireland...
so I moved to London and there's some London inspiration on the album.
I like big cities again now.
Musically speaking, you've got some good producers.
Yeah, really nice guys. They've worked with people like Eskobar and Lisa Miskovsky.
Talented guys.
I have to bring up a thing now that you're here.
George Michael said in an interview...
He's not really called George Michael, but it has become an actual name.
So now his family has started to call him George.
Does anyone call you Joakim?
Yeah, close relatives and family. Mom. It's Joakim or Jocke.
When she's getting strict with you...
Yeah. "Joakim!"
I've gotten used to Joey. Close friends in the business call me Joey.
It's both.
Thank you for taking the time to visit.
No problem.
The album's called "Joey Tempest". The new single is "Forgiven".
I've got five signed copies. We're gonna give them out as prizes on Topp 20.
Here is the chart from number 10 to 2.
