\f0\b\fs24 \cf0 CTE as Pathway to Prosperity\ \
Kim Green:\'a0 \b0 The last report then is pathways to prosperity.\'a0
We talked a little bit about this last night.\'a0 This report was written by someone who worked
at Business Week.\'a0 And was charged with \'96I\'92m talking about how does the education
system need to transform in order to meet the needs of Business and Industry.\
\ So Bill Symonds, the author, started down
this path and quickly went to the European models as many people do and said, \'93They
have a great system over there. \'a0But we know that it can\'92t just be transplanted
into United States.\'94 \'a0And Bill\'92s boss, Bob Schwartz.\'a0 Bob Schwartz is a
founder of the group called Achieve, which was the offshoot of the National Government
Association. \ \
\b Kim Green:\'a0 \b0 Achieve was the group that heads up the
American Diploma Project.\'a0 And really transformed, in many ways, the expectations of high school
graduation in the country. \'a0Bob also was kind of the driver; many people don\'92t know
this, behind the scenes of no child left behind.\ \
\b 1:01\
\b0 \ He was a believer that we needed to have more
rigorous academic standards in order for the United States to do well in the global economy.\'a0
Well Bob and Bill, if they were here, and I know Bill is going to be at a conference
later on.\'a0 He would say, \'93We made a mistake in the United States.\'94 \'a0And
that\'92s what this report is in my mind.\ \
It\'92s a mea culpa.\'a0 We made a mistake in the United States not by having higher
academic standards, but by saying there is only one way to achieve those standards.\'a0
And so, as this report says it is great to have higher standards, but there\'92s lots
of different ways to be successful in achieving those standards.\'a0 And a big part of what
we need to do in order to help more students be successful is increase career counseling.\'a0
So that kids and parents really know and understand what the needs are of this economy.\
