The 14th amendment of the United States Constitution.
Yes!
A historic day for Michigan as a federal judge strikes down a ban on same sex marriage.
The judge found the ban was a violation of equal protection rights in the US.
That means gay couples like April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, seen here celebrating the victory,
can marry legally in the state of Michigan.
I'm overwhelmed. We're actually going to be a legalised family, a recognised family by everybody.
This is what we've wanted for our family and families like ours, and you know, we are just
so happy and you know proud that Michigan is now on the right side of history.
It is because of April and Jayne this outcome has happened. The couple challenged the states
laws on both same sex marriage and adoption.
But the fight isn't quite over yet, there is a chance the ruling could be overturned.
18 states in the US permit gay couples to marry, and if recent court decisions are upheld,
that number is set to rise.
