JOEL SIEGEL: So, when approaching the hi-hat with your sticks, we'll start off with having
the hi-hats closed so you're going to have a firm grip on it with your foot firmly down.
To start off with the French grip that we are talking about earlier and it's the same
principle as far as the type of sound, drawing the sound out and the delicacy of the French
grip. But the main thing that you're going to notice is the striking of cymbal is going
to have a lot different characteristics as far as the rebound and how it feels in your
hand versus drumming on the head. So, here is what your French grip will quickly just
go through the up stroke, down stroke and full stroke. You can hear that some strokes
are little beefier, some are like quieter. This is also going to play into account when
you have your cymbals open.
