The original castle was founded in 1233/35 by Raimond Bérenger V (c1198 – 1245), Comte de Provence.

The original castle was destroyed during the reign of the legendary Queen Jeanne.

During the Wars of Religion, the French king decided to place in the citadel of Guillaumes
a permanent garrison of two compagnies of regular troupes under command of a Governor.
