Because day old chicks are sent via the mail, it helps to select a hatchery that is as close
to your address as possible.
you can hear the chicks peeping inside the box....
Removing the lid will help get heat to the chicks
The Red dye on the substrate is Quick Chick, a energy treat for the chicks to eat during
shipment...
Use many layers of newspaper so chicks can get their footing.
Even though chicks will eventually find the water on their own, it's helpful to go ahead
and dip each beak in the water...
The surface temperature under the heat lamp should be between 85 and 90 deg. F.
By day two or three, pine shavings (not sawdust) should cover the brooder floor.
This will give them sure footing and will absorb moisture from their droppings...
The chick that was hand held at the beginning is now running around just fine and is warmed
up.
Chicks that don't huddle up are feeling just fine and this pattern shows that the heat
settings are just right.
If they pile up, they are too cold
If they spread out to the corners, they are too hot
