Kauai Humane Society also has a pet transfer program where we transfer dogs and puppies
to mainland shelters that have very high adoption rates. Another way to give back would be to
escort a dog to the mainland. We’re always looking for people flying on Alaska Airlines
to Oakland, Portland, and Seattle. If you’re on a nonstop Alaskan flight to the mainland,
you can stop in or give us a call. If it works out, it’s very easy for you, we just meet
you at the airport, get the dog checked in and on the other end a volunteer picks up
the dog from you.
So you’re really giving back and helping Kauai Humane Society without having to do
much work at all.
One example is Cougar. Cougar was here for four months, he a scruffy long-hairier air
dale mix, not very common in the mainland shelters but he was here up for adoption for
four months. I never really saw anyone look at him. We transferred him to Oakland and
he was adopted within three days. Once adopted, Cougar became a media sensation, we were interviewed
by the associated press about our pet transfer program and Cougar now lives in a loft in
San Francisco with a furniture maker. He travels around in a truck and is doing fantastic.
So if you’re visiting the island, come down to the Kauai Humane Society and see how you
can give back to the animals.
