what i've learned about flipcams is theyre incredibly easy to use
but they're hard to use well
i think that what i will
need to work on
after that project is and when i started to learn what macs can do, when i started using flipcams myself is
i went wild and
began documenting everything
when i had as as speaker come consulting come from the national collegiate honor society to
speak with faculty
last may for facultu development she was here for a day
it was terriffic i used the flipcam to document portions of her
presentations that i could share that with the people who couldn't be there
one thing i learned that in addition to technique also having
short clips rather than trying to reporting long presentations is really key
i'll just tell you a few things that i do i go out an interview
principles
i bring those interviews in
not only for
my grad students who want to be principals
but also for the kids who think they want to be
teachers
i learned that
a ten minute interview
is much better than
twenty five or thirty
so i can go out and interview some of my
principal friends and have ten minute
segments
they can be talking about different things
then were timeless and not space bound
they don't have to leave school
drive down from bellows falls
i can just take steve teller right out of
my pocket here he is right on my flash drive
plug it in
he gets to appear three times
without ever leaving
school
im going to do a couple of interviews
with some
teachers over in Marlborough
they don't have to leave their classroom their kids
they don't have to get a sub
it kind of builds the video library i can bring people into the classroom
im fortunate in that we hired a new
colleague in the music department where i work
she came in
all of these ideas of using video in the classroom for assessment
and everything else
which prompted me to go to
bestbuy and find a flip video on sale
and i started using it
the ways that she and i have been using a video recording
actual things that musicians have to do
i teach a conducting class the students have to prepare conducting
exercises they come to the classroom conduct
the other students and myself
its wonderful to be able to video that
and send that to them
we also use it in the field
with our teaching candidates when they go out to student teach when they go out
in their practicum settings because it allows them to evaluate their work but also
that allows them to bring the work
back into the seminar
discuss it in front of the entire class
if an issue arises
rather than just the telling us about it
we will see it
we can see it much better
how to make comments on what is happening
there are a number of other
things that we would like to do
our music students could use it to record practice sessions
while youre in the heat of playing you don't always know what you sound like
mhm i just bought a new horn
costs thousands of dollars wanna make sure that that's right never go by
yourself go with somebody else who stands away from you because you know what it feels
like but you don't know what it sounds like
from away
that was the idea of recording these things
and in just listening to other people talk about it
various things
other forms of assessment rather than writing a paper at the end of a class
presenting something
i cant remember
who it was in the film studies program
they said that
youtube was going to revolutionize
the way education is done this is one of the ways using it as an
alternate form of assessment having students use the camera
i was just thinking about this some ideas
i need to keep this with me cause there are so many ways we can use it
i was thinking for practice interviews
just on the spot
or even
some of the students who are blind
or have a learning disibility
really should be meeting with
faculty before the
semester starts
and i think that even doing a little
practice and
other things that
that uh... various ways it could be used
