A NRA-commissioned task force presented its student-safety plan on Tuesday, calling for
more security and gun training programs for school employees.
Former lawmaker and taskforce head Asa Hutchinson presented the plan to address the safety in
the nation’s school and prevent future shootings. (Via The National School Shield)
The plan included: the creation of a law allowing teachers to carry firearms, requiring states
to have safety standards and security plans in place, and an online tool to evaluate a
school’s safety. (Via Politico)
Reporter: “The task force also recommended better security barriers in place around school
grounds.” Hutchinson: “They’re not adequate perimeter
fencing for a school. And ones that do, might not be in proper repair.” (Via CBS)
But The Hill reports the plan remains vague in some areas. It reported Hutchinson didn’t
know how much it would cost to maintain armed staff in school, how the training would be
paid for and what type of weapons armed school officials should carry. Hutchinson replied,
“Those decisions, are better left for local officials.”
The plan comes days after renewed gun control efforts in response to the Sandy Hook shooting
last December. Connecticut lawmakers are getting closer to tightening the state gun laws including
background checks and bans on high capacity magazines. (Via ABC)
Critics of the plan responded by emphasizing that more guns won’t solve the nation’s
gun violence problem.
A representative of the ACLU said: “It is important to create a culture of trust between
students and teachers, and arming teachers is the antithesis of that.” (Via NPR)
The NRA says it needs more time to digest the full report which is a little more than
200 pages.
