We're here in Cambridge at the Papworth Trust Rehabilitation Centre, to find out more about how
this organisation is supporting people back into work. So let's go in and find out more.
Papworth Trust is a disability charity. Our overall aim is to get people into employment.
It may be work experience, it may be part time work or it may be full time.
We assess and truly support every individual. If you take Sean who is coming to the end of
his vocational rehabilitation programme. Sean had been through all of the medical interventions;
he'd been out of work for 10 years, and actually for him, that journey into employment
was one he thought he would never take.
I was very nervous about coming to the Papworth Trust because I've seen all these medics,
I've seen all these consultants, there's only a group of people at the Papworth Trust,
how are they going to help? There's no way I can get back to work,
there's no way I could do Monday to Friday 9 to 5.
After the third day of being here I came out, I went home, and my son turned round to me
and said Dad you're happy.
I'm now in a position after being at the Papworth Trust for 24 weeks that I'm ready for
full time employment, not part time employment, full time employment.
We have Coffee Unlimited, which is a social enterprise,
which is all about learning and training for individuals.
My name's Charlie White, I'm a customer service apprentice here at Coffee Unlimited in Papworth.
You've been on a good journey, and you're happy to where you are here and how you've got here.
In the past year I've come quite far. Very far.
I was unemployed for quite a while and I got referred to Papworth Trust employment services.
I love it, I do. I love the customers, I love who I work with, I like working with the clients.
Yeah.
Really important for Charlie that he gets that work experience so that he really has
something to be able to say to employers - actually, this is what I can do.
Working for Papworth Trust, at Coffee Unlimited, it's helped me gain a lot of skills and knowledge,
and I feel like it's going to help me progress to get a support worker job or something like that.
Within vocational rehabilitation, 91% of the customers that we work with are ready to go
into work or do go into work, and that's because we take a holistic approach and we look at the
whole person and the impact of everything on their life and all the barriers that are
stopping that person going into employment.
We're back at Cambridge station, just about to head back to London. We've had a really
great day with the Papworth Trust. What they've shown me today is that personalised support
can be really beneficial when it comes to getting people back to work, and also that
it has the potential to really change people's lives, such as we've seen with Sean and Charlie.
I'll see you next week!
