There was a school not very far away
that had recently been made accessible for wheelchair users.
So we started negotiating with that school
and at first the school said,
"Well, we can't do this because we don't understand how Maresa learns,
her communication system and everything else."
So I said, "Look, I don't expect you to know,
I expect you to be open to learning from us."
So actually I recruited Maresa's first assistants,
then the school employed them.
Well, we recruited them between us, didn't we, Maresa?
So at that point, after we'd had that experience
at the mainstream school in the unit,
where they wouldn't let us teach the communication system,
they were just not open,
my view was a school has got to learn from us
and this particular school were open to that and that's why it worked.
