[Bob:] It's a great start; to either own your own dairy,
or manage a dairy or manage a herd of cows.
You're learning basic skills to be a herdsperson.
[Angela:] After working on many operations, we decided that we wanted to do it ourselves.
We got a family loan to buy our first 35 cows, and grew to 300.
[Adriaan:] We learned how to balance rations, for different groups, like your high milk cow groups and your low groups.
We have genetic spotsÉyou learn how to mate cattle,
how to breed for what you want, like type or production.
[Angela:] In this program you need to be highly motivated.
It can be done, you just have to have the passion and the drive
and good communications skills, because you have to communicate with a lot of people.
[Adriaan:] I hope to run my own farm someday.
I'll probably be a herdsman first, for a couple years, and then take over my dad's farm.
Yeah, you work a lot of hours, but it doesn't really seem like work you enjoy it so much.
