Hi I’m Jacqueline, and I’m Candace. Welcome to Aisle by Aisle.
We are taking trips through the grocery store to share with you a few tips we’ve learned
about making healthier food and drink choices. [Jacqueline]
In this segment, we are going to talk about bread.

[Candace] One thing I learned in my struggle to eat
healthier is that the bread aisle is one of the most confusing in the store.
[Jacqueline] I agree! It is overwhelming to decide between
oat bran, flaxseed, multi-grain, 7-grain, white, wheat and whole wheat.
I used to eat white bread, but now I choose healthier whole grain options. I have really
tried to make the right choices in this aisle, but I find it difficult to
look beyond all the marketing on the package. It seems every package tells me
why this one is better than the other.
[Candace] Don’t be fooled by the gimmicks on the front
of the package. The ingredient list will tell you what’s really in your
bread. Always choose bread that has the word WHOLE describing the grain. For the longest
time I thought I was making the best choice when I selected 100% wheat
bread. Now that I know better, I always pick the whole wheat bread.
[Jacqueline] One of the trickiest things I’ve found written
on bread packages is where it says, MADE WITH WHOLE GRAIN or CONTAINS WHOLE
GRAINS. I recently learned this does not mean the entire package is made from whole grains.
It may contain other grains too. You can make these choices in all sections
of the bread aisle. Whether you are choosing English Muffins, sliced bread
or rolls, be sure you’re getting a whole grain product. You can use the ingredient
list to find the word WHOLE written before the type of grain.
[Candace] And to cut calories, look for breads with
60 calories or less per slice.
[Jaqueline] We hope this trip through the grocery store
aisles has been enlightening for you –
[Candace] it was for us!
