The Butler Way is a standard. We set ourselves off by our academic excellence, by our sense
of diversity within our students and just within the communities that we serve.
Butler's emphasis on service learning is a real asset to students as they go forward.
As you're taking from the University in terms of experiences and a quality education, you
should also be giving back to the University through service, through volunteerism.
As opposed to just telling you, you need to volunteer and teaching altruism, Butler actually
applies it in their curriculum.
I actually get to go out and teach underprivileged children in the Indianapolis community and
you know get them engaged in a fine art.
That puts them in touch with a new population. It makes them teachers, it makes them practice
the art of teaching the arts. It's a great way to get people set up for the rest of their
lives.
You know, the Butler Way is demanding commitment, it's denying selfishness, it's being accepting
of people. It's making sure you care first and foremost about your community.
Butler being in a dynamic, urban center where there's a variety of opportunities, as well
as challenges that are presented, makes it appropriate that we are engaging it at a community
level.
Butler has allowed me to break out of my comfort zone to take a genuine interest to understanding
other people.
When we think about others instead of ourselves, we grow more into that servant leadership
position that I think Butler really stresses.
Butler is selflessness.
Butler is welcoming.
Butler is service.
