Hello! I'm Dawn Witcher, the soon-to-be President of RID starting August 14.
I want to announce three current board vacancies: Deaf Member at Large (DMAL), Treasurer and Secretary.
Starting August 14, we will search for people to appoint to these positions as interim board members.
The persons appointed will assume the roles of each position until the special election.
The requirements for the vacancies include:
The DMAL position requires that applicants are members for 4 continuous years and current members,
either certified or associate.
4 continuous years as a member means, for example, that if I were to join in 2000 and then discontinue my membership
only to rejoin in 2011, I would not be eligible because I hadn't been a member for 4 consecutive years.
For the positions of treasurer and secretary, you must also have been a member for 4 consecutive years
and have current membership status, but you also must be a certified member.
For those interested in serving during the interim who meet the qualifications
you must do the following: 1- send a letter of interest, and 2- send a copy of your resume.
Please send both of these documents to: nominations@rid.org
Applications must be submitted before midnight EST on August 31;
applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.
Once applications are received, Vice President Melvin Walker will confirm receipt, and set up an interview.
Interviews will be conducted from September 1- 9. Once finished, the board will deliberate
and provide recommendations to me, after which a final decision will be made, and announced by September 14.
While the August 14- September 14 timeframe seems short, this process has already been delayed.
Now that the process for finding an interim has been explained, I'd like to go into detail about the special election.
Those interested in being officially appointed to one of the three vacant positions,
will go through the special election nomination process which is essentially the same as the normal nomination process.
4 consecutive years as a member is required, along with a nomination form which must include 25 signatures or more.
Signatures must come from voting members- those who aren't eligible to vote are also ineligible to provide their signature.
So again, you must have 25 signatures or more and at least one from each of the 5 regions.
If each of those requirements are met, you can send in your application to nominations@rid.org.
If only one person sends in an application and meets the requirement for 4 consecutive years as a member,
is a current member and has sent the nomination form, it is called an uncontested election.
The board will announce who that person is, after my vote of support, in December.
If the election is contested, we will call for a member vote.
The board will announce the vote which will go from January 1- 31.
The board will announce which nominee has been selected by February 10.
Both the board vacancies and special elections have been explained in detail
but if you have any questions, please feel free to send an email to nominations@rid.org. Thank you!
