I am in the PH.D. Higher Education Administration program. I really just like working with the
college population in general. I guess most of my growing happened in college so I feel
obligated to return that favor and help other college students grow. I came on board once
the sustainability office was officially formed. Education is probably the most important thing
that we do in our office. For us to make the largest, most widespread impact, it has to
happen through education. My day starts off out on campus picking up recycling. The university
recycling program is all over campus. The goal is to have a seven gallon can in every
space on campus, whether it’s an office, a classroom, a residence hall room, any space,
conference room even. The goal is for it to be easy, convenient, and accessible to anyone
who is on campus. I think the staff and the faculty are very embracing of it. I think
that they realize the importance of it. Eco Eagle Bikes is, we have about 50 bikes right
now, and essentially students can sign up every semester. We do give priority to off-campus
students because we’re hoping to have them bike to campus rather than drive their vehicle
to campus. They sign up, and we hand them out for free each semester. My biggest thing
about going green in my personal life is really just about conserving. I try to buy things
that I can reuse. A healthy lifestyle for me is all about balance. I live in the Payne
Center when I’m not here and the trace. That’s pretty much a lot of what I do. If
I’m not reading or working out, then I’m probably sleeping. My words of wisdom would
be do what’s right and not what’s expected. I think sometimes what’s expected is perceived
as right. Sometimes you have to go against the grain. That’s how change happens in
our country. That’s how change has happened throughout history.
