Zain, A beautiful world
Your Day With Me
with Feras Bugnah
Peace be upon you
Welcome to the fifth episode of: Your Day With Me
And today is your day with me as a physically disabled person
At the beginning let me clarify a very important point
This wheelchair for a disabled person is like legs for the rest of us
Which means that when a disabled person is on the wheelchair
He should be able to practise his daily activities normally just like any other person who can walk
In this episode, we will have more than one experiment
So we can see if our society is prepared for disabled people as it is for others or not
And our first experiment is: The taxi
The experiment is simply that I'll go on the street on the wheelchair and try to stop a taxi
What I'm expecting is that no taxi will stop for me
Because most taxis are lazy to stop
Then put the wheelchair in the car, and when they arrive at the destination they take it out again
And that is exactly what happened
In half an hour, more than five taxis passed by me, and not a single one of them stopped
Why ?
Because I'm on a wheelchair
At the same time
More than one young man stopped and offered to give me a ride
Because they know that taxis won't stop for me

The second experiment is: Getting around on the wheelchair
We want to see if streets and places are equipped for a wheelchair or not
Unfortunately we noticed that it is very rare to find a street or a shop that has a ramp for wheelchairs to use
And even it there was, the ramp would be too steep for wheelchair users to use independently
So he is forced to take someone along to help him
The third experiment was: Driving
Some physically disabled people can not use their legs at all
Some people think that because he can't use his legs, then he definitely can't drive
And that is wrong, lets see together
"So mohammed, people that can't use their legs can't drive?"
"No, he can drive"
"He can by a simple modification in the car which is the driving device"
"If the car is automatic he can install the driving device which can be installed in any car of course"
"And he can drive by using his hands instead of his legs"
"Ok, so can you show us the device?"
"Yeah sure, this is the device"
"This device allows you to control the gas and break with your hand instead of your leg"
"So we can accelerate in this way"
"And this is the break, and that's it"
"Is it easy to use?"
"That's what your leg controls, it's adjusted for you to control with your hand"
"So is driving it easy?"
"It requires some practise but if you know how to drive a car it wouldn't be very difficult"
"People who usually suffer are those who want to drive with their hands straight away"
"How much does this device cost?"
"The device is provided by the ministry of social affairs"
"Free of charge?"
"Yes as long as the car is registered to the person who has the disability and he has a valid license"
"He applies to the ministry with a medical record or proof of disability and they approve it for him"
"How long did it take you? a week?"
"No it only took two hours"
"I went to the ministry within 2-3 hours"
"Or if there was a big group of people it will take a maximum of one day to get the reliance form"
"And you take it to the company that install the device and thats it"

The fourth and last experiment was: Malls and disabled parking
We went to several malls
To see if people will respect the disabled parking spaces and not use them or not
As we expected all the disabled parking spaces were used by abled people in all the malls
So do you know what parking in disabled parking spaces cause?
The person who is actually disabled has to go to the nearest free space
And this parking space can be tens of meters away from the entrance
So he has to cross all that distance on his wheelchair to get to the entrance
And all of that because you took his parking space

At the end of the episode we just want to convey one message
And focus on this message
A disabled person doesn't need your sympathy and doesn't want your service
What he simply wants is that the basics services are provided for him
And once they are provided, you shouldn't use it for your own benefit
A small thing before I conclude
Please, I beg you
If you see an abled person parking in a disabled parking space
Call the traffic police and report it, the fine on that is 500 Riyals
Goodbye
