My name is Jorge Calero Arjun, I live here in the Atlantida Ecovillage
and I have practiced the Dances of Universal Peace for about ten, eleven years.
Dances of Universal Peace A Tool for Ecovillages
The personal dimension of the Dances of Universal Peace is fully in sync with
the momentum of planetary evolution that we human beings are living right now...
Going beyond our individuality... to be able to feel ourselves as a part of something bigger.
To leave a bit of our historical individualism, in this modern era of capitalism and
and industrial development and consumerism that has reached a peak, a peak of individualism.
So precisely to go out there and break that barrier a little bit of what's "mine" and to go back to
feeling part of something bigger, and that I have a commitment and service to this something.
An Ecovillage and a circle of Dances of Universal Peace take the individual precisely to this challenge.
In the Dances of Universal Peace, the personal contact, that you embrace one another,
take the hand of a stranger, that you make eye contact for so long and from so close,
that someone whispers in your ear...
This somehow breaks through the barrier of individualism that society has created in us.
And when you participate in a dance, your own individual freedom of expression
of movement and of song has to give in, surrender and offer itself to the bigger goal,
which in this case is to dance and sing as one circle.
In the Dances of Universal Peace, it doesn’t work that you want
to give a few extra twists and turns, change the steps,
because then you break the circle. Or that you want to sing louder than everyone else...
In some way you have to offer up part of your personal freedom
and your offering is like a gift for the greater good.
And in an Ecovillage it’s the same: in an Ecovillage you have to somehow offer up
your own personal pursuit of your own wellbeing. And you give yourself to your service for the
collective wellbeing, understanding that taking care of this collective being called an Ecovillage,
which includes a group of people and land, that to the extent that this being is well,
you will also be well. And that it doesn’t work to just try and
take care of yourself while the context to which you belong is not well.
The pursuit of individual happiness is doomed to fail because we are all interdependent.
So in that sense Ecovillages and the Dances of Universal Peace
contribute to the understanding of our transpersonal reality.
That's why it's very natural for participants of Ecovillages to practice
the Dances of Universal Peace.
Because this becomes a regular practice where community members retake the
possibility of being part of a larger circle, expressed in very concrete things,
such as a movement or a song.
