Cracks and grass make the tennis courts at Shepard Park almost impossible to use.
Fixing these courts is one of the first items on a plan the Parks Department presented to
the City Council on Monday. But some council members think it might be better to buy land
first while prices are low.
Jason Thornhill-“You know in a perfect world we could do both, but the way a ballot
issue works over a five year period is we have only so much money each year.”
The Parks Department wants to work on improvements first, like this sidewalk and trail to the
Lemone Industrial Area, because construction projects can take years to complete.
Brian Johnson- "I'm here at Atkin's field which on the current proposal is among the
top on the list of improvements.
They want to add a concessions stand, more parking and at least one more baseball field."
Mike Hood-"It's very important that voters understand that we meet our promises. We are
anticipating that in five years from now or in 2016 we may be looking at another ballot
issue."
Whether park renovations or land acquisition occurs first, the Parks Department promises
it will accomplish both in the next five years.
