I think it’s very important for students and early professionals to recognize the different
opportunities that you have as a CPA. I get students ask me a lot “I don’t know whether
to go into audit or tax” and that’s definitely not your two only choices. I know it’s probably
very focused on in college, but there’s so many different paths you can go into with
a CPA license. That’s one thing I think people need to research and learn more about
the accounting profession and the breadth of opportunities that are out there. It was
very important to me to pursue a CPA license. That was very obvious to me at the very beginning
of my career when I entered my career with KPMG. It was strongly promoted within the
firm and I did recognize it was a level of recognition, a strong voice of ethics in the
profession, and that represented something to me that I strongly believed in, being ethical
and being able to show that to my clients. I do strongly feel that you always need to
keep your opportunities open, so I believe maintaining my CPA license will continue to
provide me with opportunities in the future that I may not have if I don’t have that
license maintained. It’s important to me to give back to the Latino community; specifically
to Latinos in business because I strongly feel that there wasn’t a whole lot of information
available to me when I was a student as a business major. Having parents who did not
go to college and didn’t have that background I had very few mentors at the time and I really
latched on to a lot of my fellow students in accounting. I really do feel that allowing
me to keep my options open has landed me a great opportunity. I love what I do, I feel
like I’m giving back on a day to day basis both to professionals and to students. So
I really do feel that, you know, continue to network, keep your opportunities open,
keep your mind open different opportunities. And with a CPA license that says something
about you, says something about your integrity, your ethics, and I think that speaks a lot
to people.
