Hi there! This is Trista from the Bitterroot Public Library. And I am going to walk you
through getting started with Overdrive or Montana Library2Go as um... we call it with
our consortium. And, basically, the first thing that you will want to do if you are
going to be using Montana Library2Go for audio books is to go onto your computer and download
the software they have available that um... allows you to download the files.
So, we are going to go into our web browser and you can use any web browser. I prefer
Firefox, but you can use Internet Explorer or um... any other one. Um... actually, I'm
going to log out because that's actually me logged into the site. So this is what the
home page of the library looks like so you'd want to go to bitterrootpubliclibrary.org.
Once you're there, you're going to go from this top menu and click on Montana Library2Go.
And that's going to take you to the Montana Library2Go home page. And, on this left-hand
side, we're going to scroll down until it says, "Software Downloads." And this is what
we want to download. And you can see this first one here says, "For Overdrive Audio
Books." And since we're doing audio we're going to go ahead and click on that to download.
And here we come to the download page. It asks you which operating system you have on
your computer or if you're doing a mobile device and we are downloading to a Windows
station so I'm going to go ahead and click on "Download Now." And it's asking what to
do with the file, we're just going to save it. And then once it's downloaded, we're just
going to, I'll right click on this and click on open. And it's asking what to do with the
file and we're going to run. And um... you know, this, depending on how your system's
set up or what browser you're using, this may look a little different and it may take
a little longer um... or it may be faster depending on your internet connection. But,
basically, once we open that up, it's going to open the Overdrive Media Console Install
Wizard, which is going to walk us through the installation process. We're just going
to click on "Next" and then we're going to agree to the Terms and Conditions and click
"Next." We're going to go ahead and let it use the default file settings and then we're
going to click "Next" to install. And you can watch the progress bar to see how the
installation is going. And again, this is going to be longer or shorter depending upon
your internet connection. So, we have that all installed. WE're going to go ahead and
click "close" and I'm just going to exit out of here and we'll go back to the desktop for
a minute. Maybe... Thinking about it... Alright! So here is our new Overdrive Media Console
icon on our desktop and if we double click that it's going to open up the user interface
for the Overdrive Media Console. And when we download any audio files, they're going
to come into this program. So, let's go ahead and try that right now.
Let's exit out of here. WE're going to go back to Montana Library2Go and again, to get
to this you just click on the Montana Library2Go link that's on the home page at bitterrootpubliclibrary.org.
So, the first thing we want to do is log in. I'm going to go ahead and click on the "LOgin"
and it's going to take us to the Login page where we're going to select the library which
is "Bitterroot Public Library" and then we're going to put in a card number. And I have
a couple in here because I've maxed out on my checkouts. Which can happen, we're allowed
4 checkouts at a time. So, this is, um... I'm logged in. I can see my cart and all of
these different areas of the Montana Library2Go and I'm going to go back to the home page
and I'm just going to look at some of these Window's Media Player audio books. Um... They
have, there's MP3 audio books, Window's Media Player audio books, and those are just going
to be depending on what kind of um... device you're loading them on. And, since we're just
going to download it to our computer, we'll save downloading it to a device for another
screencast, I'm just going to use the Window's Media Player. And I'm going to say, "View
complete list"." And, so you can see we have a list of, uh, Window's Media Player files.
We have the title of the item, "Add to Wislist" is if maybe you have all of your checkouts
used up and you want to get this at a later time, you can add it to your wishlist. Adding
to the cart is something that you're going to checkout and um... if that says, some of
them may say, "Place a Hold," and um... that would be um... you know... it's already checked
out and you need to wait until that person returns it. Because it's so close to Halloween,
I think I'm going to check out this "Tales of Terror." You can see there's an MP3 audio
book available and a WMA audio book. So the MP3 audio book is going to work with more
devices than the Window's Media Player audio book. But, again, since we're just downloading
to the PC, I'm going to go ahead and use the Window's Media Player file. I'm going to click
on "Add to Cart." You can click on continue browsing if you'd like to look at more books
to check out, but I'm going to go ahead and click on "Proceed to Checkout." And then,
once in here, one of the things that's really important is the lending period. When you
check out an item, you can't return it when you use Montana Library2Go, so, you get it
for that amount of time, and then the file expires, so if you think it's going to take
you 14 days to listen to it, and some of them will take much longer than that probably,
but um... then by all means, use the 14 day checkout. But, if you think, you know what,
I'm going to sit down, and I'm going to listen to this real quick, I'm going to get it done
this week, then you can change this checkout to 7 day checkout and what that's going to
do, that's going to return it after that 7 days, unless you renew it. And then, that
will allow you to check out more books. Um... so, just depending on your style, how you
listen to the audio books, um... you know, you do have that option. I'm going to pick
7 day because I'm using this just as an example. So, I'm going to click on "Confirm Checkout."
And, so here is my checkout screen, and from here, I can click on "Download" to download
the file. And, it's asking me what I want to do with the file, so and the default it's
asking is let's open this up with Overdrive Media Console and that's exactly what we want
to do. So, I'm going to click "OK." The Overdrive Media Console comes up, it tells me this is
the folder we're going to put it in. And, that's fine, um... you know, we'll just use
the default. So, I'm going to click "OK" and then it comes up with this download window.
And, what I'm actually going to do, I'm going to uncheck, I'm just going to download Part
1. One of the things that can happen, especially if you have an internet connection that can
be a little um... unreliable, or if it's kind of slow, you can have the download stop in
the middle of the download and then have to restart it. And that's not a big deal, but
what happens, is Overdrive has a download limit of 3 times, so you get 3 attempts at
downloading it, because they want you to just, um... use it on 3... 3 devices, or 3 computers,
I think is kind of what they're going for, but, um... so if you run into some issues
with the download, you can quickly use up your allotted 3 times, and then be unable
to download the item unless you come in and have us... actually, you could call us and
we can reset the download limit. But, what's a good thing to do, especially again if you
have a real fast internet connection you probably don't need to worry about this, but if your
connection is a little spotty or a little slow, just download one part at a time, and
that's going to allow you to um... if there's an interruption you should be able to restart
just that part. So I'm going to say "OK" and you can see down here in the bottom, it has
started downloading part 1, and it is, um... it has that progress bar down there and um...
these files are fairly large, it can take quite a long time depending upon how big the
book is, and um... again, you know, especially if your bandwidth is low, um... or your internet
connection is slow, you would want to download the separate parts separately.
So, that is the basics of getting the Overdrive Media Console onto your computer and also
downloading an audio book into the Overdrive Media Console. Once it's in here, you can
listen to it on the computer, you can transfer it to a device, or burn it to a CD depending
upon the types of files. Each file will be a little limited. I think some of the Window's
Media Players can burn to CDs and some can't just depending upon the licensing. But, so
this, this is the, once it's in here you have these controls up here to then move it to
other places. And we're going to um... focus on different devices in some later screencasts.
So, that is the um... basics of downloading Overdrive Media Console and we will cover
some of the other devices in other videos.
