Welcome to the third episode of The Hat Guy Disc Golf!
THG Disc Golf follows world champion Avery Jenkins on his throwing clinic tour around Finland.
During the tour The Hat Guy explores different parts of the game such as courses, equipment and technique.
The tip in this episode is about knowing your game and your discs.
In the course it's really important to know whant kind of shots you can throw.
What kind of lines you can throw, the distances and what kind of throw suits the situation you are in.
In addition to knowing your throws you need to know what discs you are carrying in your bag and how to use them in different situations.
54m (177 feet) long hole curving to right. It's quite safe to assume that you don't need your fastest drivers here.
My choice here would be a midrange disc or a putter depending how you know your discs and the distances you can cover with them.
Hole #6. It turns right and goes downhill after a small bump.
If you choose a too stable disc to throw here you can easily end up in the bushes on the left side.
This can cause an extra throw or two.
If you try to hit a too greedy or long line towards the basket you might hit the trees on the right side.
On holes like this it's really important to know your throws and try to find a shot that suits you the best.
You might want to throw over the bump and slightly downhill and approach the basket there with easy par.
You should always go through your throws with some thought. Build the throw and line with small steps instead of just thinking how to reach the basket.
This can save you a throw or more.
In the Hat Guy Disc reviews today we have the Star Tern from Innova. A fast and understable driver.
As Avery just told us Star Tern is a really good and fast distance driver for beginners.
It's understable which means that you can turn it over with ease and throw some nice S-throws.
With these throws you can reach nice distance by throwing the disc in a nice curve.
If you have a stronger arm and faster armspeed this disc can easily flip over. You'll need more room for larger curves with more speed.
For beginners and players with slower armspeed the Tern is a magnificient disc. From now on it's one of my go-to-drivers.
"Really fast and understable distance driver for beginners and players who have played for some time. Easy to control with lighter throws but can flip over if thrown too fast."
While choosing your shorts you should concider few things.
Your shorts should have some room for movement. Your legs move a lot when traveling on the course and throwing your shots.
When you shoot your drive the shorts shouldn't be on the way of your movement.
Check out the Golf-section of your sports vendor for some equipment used by traditional golf players. Most of the shorts will suit disc golf quite well.
Look for material that breathes, stretches and is material that is durable. This way you shouldn't need to change your shorts with every small scratch.
"Nike Golf Tour Performance shorts bring some style to the course"
"Water and dirt resistant Peak Performance G Dave shorts will endure even the roughest of rounds."
While traveling to Peurunka from Varkaus we decided to take a little detour and visit Suonenjoki Disc Golf Park.
Here's a short course review from Suonenjoki.
The 18-hole course of Suonenjoki starts with a open hole #1 but changes quite fast to a forest course with tight lines.
Starting from hole #5 you'll encounter tight but pleasant lines and some challenges with elevation.
Even tough all the holes on the course are par 3 there's some longer and shorter holes on the course.
Different throwing techniques and discs are needed to throw the course succesfully.
You get to know some of the lines only by throwing and 18 new holes brought up the skill difference between our heroes.
Avery slightly missed the course record with a result of -9 while the Hatguy had some troubles with a result of +3.
The Suonenjoki course offers a rather nice and wholesome experience. I'd recommend you to try it if you happen to be around.
While we drive from a clinic to another we have some time to discuss all kind of things related to disc golf and everything else.
In this episode we hear Avery's thoughts on how he prepares for new courses and how he faces the challenge.
