I came from a small high school so I was used to knowing everybody on my way to class and
here at Southern Miss I get to feel like I am getting a university experience, getting
what I wanted to get as a college student while still being able to know people. I was
really surprised and delighted once I got on campus that I didn't feel like I was still
tied down to my parents, as bad as that may sound, but I was really worried that going
to Southern Miss and only being an hour, literally less than an hour away from home, and less
than twenty minutes away from my high school that I was really surprised to feel like I
was somewhere else. I felt like I was in a different state. Really once you get on campus
it's like you have left home. It's really it's own community and that's what I was really
happy to feel. My most memorable moment was probably getting to crown Homecoming queen
this year. That was a huge honor for me. I was Miss USM last year and as that I got to
crown her on the football field, which I had never gotten to walk on before. So that was
something I'll remember for a really long time. I was extremely surprised and excited
to know that I won a Goldwater Scholarship. I won it as a sophomore, and generally you
don't win until a junior and just submit it as a sophomore and just resubmit it later
with a few weeks. So it was a big surprise for both me and a lot of the faculty and my
parents of course, but it was a very exciting day.
